| Kingsport Police Patrol Officers recovered three stolen vehicles and arrested three suspects in three separate incidents on the same day.
On August 18, 2013 at approximately 8:00 AM, Jeffrey A. Creech was arrested for motor vehicle theft in the parking lot of 704 Lynn Garden Drive in Kingsport, by K.P.D. Patrol Officers Jesse Griggs and Andy Goddard. Creech asked a passing motorist for a “jump start” and was observed to be attempting to start the vehicle with a screwdriver, which the observant citizen found suspicious and promptly reported. The vehicle, a 1995 Nissan Pickup Truck, had been stolen on August 16 from the parking lot of Wallace Nissan, located at 2733 East Stone Drive, where an employee of the dealership had left it parked overnight. In a second incident, on the same day at approximately 10:50 AM, K.P.D. Patrol Officer Jesse Griggs arrested David M. Stallard for Motor Vehicle Theft at Model City Apartments, located at 1000 Stonegate Road in Kingsport, after he was observed exiting a stolen vehicle and going into Apartment #C-3. The vehicle, a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix, had been stolen on August 15, 2013 from Bill McConnell’s Paint and Body, located at 2551 East Stone Drive, where it had been left for repair. The final incident began on the same day at approximately 12:00 noon. An individual had left his 2013 Mercedes Sport Utility Vehicle unlocked, with the keys in the ignition, and the engine running, in the downtown parking garage, located at 201 Shelby Street in Kingsport. The owner left the vehicle running, because his dog was inside. When he returned a few minutes later, his vehicle was missing. Approximately 15 minutes after the report was filed, Sgt. Steve Summey, conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle, driven by Tonya L. Roof, near the intersection of West Stone Drive and Bloomingdale Pike. Ms. Roof was arrested for Motor Vehicle Theft over $60,000 and Driving on a Revoked License. The dog was still inside the vehicle at the time of the arrest, and both the dog and vehicle were expeditiously returned to the owner. The Kingsport Police Department wishes to stress that it is never advisable to leave an unattended vehicle unlocked, let alone with the keys in the ignition and the engine running. Recovering stolen property is one of the missions of the Kingsport Police Department, but for one Police Patrol Platoon to recover three stolen vehicles in less than five hours on the same day is exceptional police work.
