Police Blog

SUBJECT:  KPD Reminds Motorist How To Yield To Emergency Vehicles

DATE:  May 31st, 2024

GENERAL NARRATIVE

The Kingsport Police Department has been observing an increase in motorist not yielding properly, or not yielding at all to emergency traffic. The Kingsport Police Department wants to remind motorists that if you see approaching emergency vehicles from the rear, move as far right as possible and stop to allow the emergency vehicle to pass safely. If emergency vehicles are approaching an intersection, please stop to allow them to safely move through the intersection.

The Kingsport Police Department and other emergency services only run lights and sirens when there is an emergency call that is in need of immediate attention (overdose, crash with injuries, disturbances with weapons, or other life-threatening emergencies).

If the emergency vehicle is stopped on the shoulder of a multiple travel lane road with it’s emergency lights activated, motorists should move as far left as possible. If you are unable to safely move to the left due to traffic, you should slow down to half the posted speed limit.

Allandale Mansion hosting Yoga Dance sessions in June

City News

Allandale Mansion is partnering with a local yoga instructor to offer two Yoga Dance classes at the Brooks Pavilion next month.

The Yoga Dance classes will be held on June 9 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and on June 28 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Please bring your own mat and water. The cost is $8 per person and the classes are for anyone ages 16 and over. Limit of 20 participants.

The yoga dance technique incorporates elements of dance (Latin and some ballet) with exercise-science based yoga. This class will be a full-body workout to include flexion and extension of the spine, upper body, core and legs.

City News

Popular cooking series at Kingsport Farmers Market highlights local chefs

Saturdays with the Chef makes its return to the Kingsport Farmers Market on June 1. Discover how to take advantage of those peak season produce items with creative tips and new recipes from local chefs.

“We’re excited to bring in the summer season with this wonderful program,” said Market Manager Kristie Leonard. “The Kingsport Farmers Market is a great place to shop, but we also strive to be a place where people can learn something new too.”

Saturdays with the Chef is a free cooking demo series showcasing local chefs and their recipes using produce available at the Kingsport Farmers Market. Free samples of the recipes will be available at each demo.

The series takes place every Saturday morning at 9 a.m. in June at the Kingsport Farmers Market.

Come sample cooking from featured chefs from local businesses, then buy the ingredients to make it at home while you’re at the market. Purchasing from local farmers not only boosts the local economy, but also is a great way to provide healthy and fresh food for you and your family.

The series is sponsored by Food City, Healthy Kingsport and the City of Kingsport.

Celebrate National Trails Day with a Glow Walk on the Greenbelt

City News, City Press Releases

Kingsport’s Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a special Glow Walk event on June 1 in celebration of National Trail Days.

The Glow Walk will be held from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. on June 1 at the Indian Drive Trailhead of the Kingsport Greenbelt (located behind PetSmart). The free event is open to families of all ages. Participants are asked to bring a flashlight or lantern, and glow necklaces will be provided.

Though the event is free, Kingsport Parks and Recreation officials are asking folks to register to know approximately how many people will be showing

To register, visit https://bit.ly/4dY7Fcu. You can also register by clicking on the CivicRec link in the Connect Kingsport app or by going to www.kingsporttn.gov and clicking on the “CivicRec” link, then searching for “glow walk” in the search bar.

National Trails Day is an annual event held on the first Saturday in June and is sponsored by the American Hiking Society.

Each year, tens of thousands of hikers, bikers, paddlers, horseback riders, trail clubs, federal and local agencies, land trusts, and businesses come together on National Trails Day to advocate for, maintain, clean up and celebrate trails and nature.

Last year, nearly 800 events were held across the U.S., bringing people together for various recreational and volunteer opportunities. More than 7,000 trail stewards improved 558 miles of trails, contributing approximately $1.27 million in volunteer labor.

“From Borden Park to the Kingsport Greenbelt to Bays Mountain Park, Kingsport has trails for all ages and all abilities,” said Travis Sensabaugh, program administrator for Kingsport Parks and Recreation. “Even if it’s only for 20 minutes, we encourage you and your family to go outside this Saturday and participate in National Trails Day.”

You can also share your trail experience by tagging #NationalTrailsDay and @AmericanHiking on your social media channels.
