KINGSPORT – City offices, including City Hall, the Library, Renaissance Center, Senior Center and the Demolition Landfill, will be closed Monday, August 2, 2013 in observance of the Labor Day Holiday. There will be no changes to the garbage, trash and recycling collection schedule, with all routes running on regular schedules. Bays Mountain Park will also be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, with planetarium shows at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. and barge rides available at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

KINGSPORT – Kingsport Parks and Recreation is now accepting registration for youth basketball. Leagues are offered for boys ages 5 ‚¬ 17 and girls ages 5 ‚¬ 15. Participants must live inside Kingsport City limits, own property in the City of Kingsport or attend Kingsport City Schools to be eligible. Registration fee is $20 per child. Registration forms are available at the Athletic Office in the Civic Auditorium Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30am and 5:30pm.

KINGSPORT The Dobyns-Bennett High School Alumni Association Board is proud to announce the Dobyns-Bennett Alumni Hall of Fame Class of 2013: Eddie Durham, Barbara Goodlett, Beryl Shipley, Vince Staten, Dickie Warren and Bruce Wilder.

The 2013 Induction Ceremony will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at 11 a.m. located at MeadowView Marriott Conference Resort and Convention Center in the Junior Ballroom. The ceremony is open to the public but seating is limited. Tickets are $50 in advance and $60 the day of the event; lunch is provided.

“During the many years of existence of Dobyns-Bennett the school has graduated many students who continued their growth to extremely high levels of achievement and have made major contributions to society, said D-B Alumni Association Past President Bill Lee. The Citizens Academy is not designed to prepare citizens to become police officers; however, it will give citizens a chance to walk a few steps in an officers shoes to get the feel of what it might be like to serve as a police officer and to better understand why officers do what they do.‚  Citizens Academy classes include a mixture of classroom presentations, demonstrations, and hands on activities.

Class topics include:

General Narrative

An individual is wanted by the Kingsport Police Department for cashing multiple counterfeit checks at two local grocery stores.

On August 10, 2013 an unidentified suspect cashed two counterfeit checks at two different locations in Kingsport. He cashed the first check at approximately 2:15 PM at Food City at 300 Clinchfield Street and the second check at approximately 2:50 PM at Food City at 1205 North Eastman Road. The combined total the suspect received for the checks was nearly $1,000.

The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 5’10” tall, with a slim build, clean shaven, with short brown hair, in his late 20s to early 30s. When he cashed the checks, he used the alias “Austin Bell.”

While both of these locations are in Kingsport, the suspect has also passed multiple other counterfeit checks at other locations throughout the Tri-Cities area. He was last seen driving a late model teal green Audi four-door station wagon. Photos obtained from surveillance video of the suspect and his vehicle are included in this release.

KINGSPORT ‚¬ Orebank Road water customers in the 5400 block will experience a service disruption from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, August 29, 2013, to allow for an ongoing water line relocation project. The relocation is part of the ongoing Cleek Road improvement project. Customers from 5419 Orebank to 5425 Orebank will experience the outage, and should take precautions such as turning off their water heater during the work period to prevent potential damage to their system. In addition, motorists should also be aware that flag men will be present to direct traffic. Motorists should seek alternative routes and use extra caution in the work zone.

KINGSPORT ‚¬â€The right southbound lane of John B Dennis Highway approaching Lincoln Street will be closed Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at 8 a.m. until completion to allow for the replacement of a damaged utility pole in cooperation with AEP. In addition, no left turns will be allowed from Lincoln Street onto John B Dennis northbound.‚ Motorists should seek alternative routes, obey all flag personnel and use the utmost caution in the work zone.
