Winter Storm Tips from the KFD

KFD_News_13

WINTER STORMS
While the danger from winter weather varies across the country, nearly all Americans, regardless of where they live, are likely to face some type of severe winter weather at some point in their lives. Winter storms can range from a moderate snow over a few hours to a blizzard with blinding, wind-driven snow that lasts for several days. Many winter storms are accompanied by dangerously low temperatures and sometimes by strong winds, icing, sleet and freezing rain.

One of the primary concerns is the winter weather’s ability to knock out heat, power and communications services to your home or office, sometimes for days at a time. Heavy snowfall and extreme cold can immobilize an entire region.

The National Weather Service refers to winter storms as the Deceptive Killers because most deaths are indirectly related to the storm. Instead, people die in traffic accidents on icy roads and of hypothermia from prolonged exposure to cold. It is important to be prepared for winter weather before it strikes.

To prepare for a winter storm you should do the following:

-Before winter approaches, add the following supplies to your emergency kit:‚
-Rock salt or more environmentally safe products to melt ice on walkways. Visit the Environmental Protection Agency for a complete list of recommended products.
-Sand to improve traction.
-Snow shovels and other snow removal equipment.
-Sufficient heating fuel. You may become isolated in your home and regular fuel sources may be cut off. Store a good supply of dry, seasoned wood for your fireplace or wood-burning stove.
-Adequate clothing and blankets to keep you warm.
-Make a Family Communications Plan. Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to know how you will contact one another, how you will get back together and what you will do in case of an emergency.
-Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or other local news channels for critical information from the National Weather Service (NWS). Be alert to changing weather conditions.
-Minimize travel. If travel is necessary, keep a disaster supplies kit in your vehicle.
-Bring pets/companion animals inside during winter weather. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas with non-frozen drinking water.

Bays Mountain Planetarium announces new presentation

Bays_Mtn_Planetarium_13

KINGSPORT – A new show is starting this weekend in the planetarium theater at Bays Mountain! The show, entitled “Appalachian Skies – Winter,” is a brand-new live show that takes visitors on a journey of the current winter sky. The presentation is designed to take advantage of the many cool features of the Powerdome digital system and the planetarium’s fantastic optical sky projector. The show was designed and programmed by Bays Mountain‘s Jason Dorfman, Astronomy & Space Sciences Program Administrator – Educational Interpreter. This feature is our alternate offering for the weekends of the months of January and February and will show at 2 p.m.

The current feature presentation is “The Case of the Disappearing Planet.”  It’s a fun show that looks at what we call a planet.  Of course, it covers the status of Pluto.  It also shows that this labeling change happened 200 years ago with the discovery of the asteroids.  The shows’ main character, Skye Watcher, is a savvy, 1940’s-style gumshoe.  This presentation is shown at 4 p.m. Tues.-Fri. and 1 p.m. & 4 p.m. on the weekends.

Visit Bays Mountain Park and enjoy these shows along with great nature programs and our Park’s natural beauty!

Kingsport ChamberZone Celebrates 200th Episode

ChamberZone

KINGSPORT ‚¬ Kingsport ChamberZone is about to hit a milestone as the show celebrates its 200th episode.

The 200th episode will highlight many of the numerous accomplishments and developments that have occurred in Kingsport since the show debuted in July of 2003.‚

The celebration show also features congratulatory messages from area media personalities.

The 200th Kingsport ChamberZone will premiere Friday, January 13 at 7:30 p.m. on Charter Medias CMS-TV 13.

Now in its ninth season, Kingsport ChamberZone showcases news and events on the Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce and city of Kingsport and features Kingsport Chamber members and various community organizations.

We are so excited to be taping our 200th episode, said Bob Feagins, Kingsport Chamber executive director of communications and development and executive producer and co-host of Kingsport ChamberZone.‚  Kingsport ChamberZone has been such an invaluable promotional vehicle for all of the great news and many outstanding events happening with your Kingsport Chamber.‚  Its also presented to us a great opportunity to showcase the amazing growth and development that continues to occur in the city of Kingsport.

What is most remarkable to me about this milestone is its reflection on the growth and strength of Kingsport and our community, said Laura Steel Woods, vice president of legal affairs for Care Centers Management Consulting and the shows co-host.‚  Without the investment by both new and long-standing companies, without the forward-thinking initiatives of our city leaders, without the powerful community trusteeship by our residents, and without the unending support of our Kingsport Chamber, the longevity of our show wouldnt be possible.

Produced by Charter Media, Kingsport ChamberZone airs daily on Charter Medias CMS-TV 13, Charter OnDemand, Comcast Cable 2 & 14, city of Kingsports MyTown Channel 16, WKPT-TV ABC 19/WAPK-TV My Network TV, KingsportChamber.org, TimesNews.net and MyTown16.com.

The award-winning show tapes a new original episode every two weeks with the premiere episode debuting on Friday nights at 7:30 p.m. on Charter Medias CMS-TV 13.‚  The show can also be seen on Charter Medias CMS-TV 13 on Mondays at 11 a.m., Wednesdays at 11 p.m. and Fridays at 3 p.m.

Other notable show times include each day at 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on the city of Kingsports MyTown Channel 16 and each Friday at noon and 11:30 p.m. on WKPT-TV ABC 19, among other show times.

Kingsport ChamberZone won First Place for Best Local Original Programming in the Charter Media Broadcast Awards in 2007.

The first taped broadcast of Kingsport ChamberZone occurred Tuesday, July 15, 2003, from the Fort Henry Mall (now the Kingsport Town Center) with the first show airing Friday, July 18, 2003.

We are most appreciative to Charter Media and their outstanding team, especially our producer and director Conrad Casem, for their tremendous support during these nine seasons and we are very grateful to our shows many sponsors, Feagins added.‚  I am, without a doubt, most grateful to my good friend and exceptional co-host, Laura Woods, for her incredible dedication and enormous time and talent she has given to the show over the years.‚  We look forward to another 200 great episodes!

The Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce is a private, non-profit business organization comprised of nearly 1,000 members.‚  The Kingsport Chambers mission is to utilize resources and focus efforts on enhancing a strong and viable business environment for the Kingsport area.
