General Narrative |
K.P.D. has investigated a single motor vehicle crash that sent three teenagers to area hospitals.
On October 12, 2013 at approximately 8:45 PM, Kingsport Police Patrol Officer Aaron Grimes responded to Interstate 81 near mile marker 65 to investigate a single vehicle crash. His investigation revealed that a silver 1996 Acura Integra was traveling southbound on Interstate 81 when the driver’s side wheels of the vehicle ran off the left side of the road into the grass median. The driver, Benjamin A. Ball, attempted to steer the vehicle back onto the roadway; however, he overcorrected and sent the vehicle into a yaw. The vehicle spun across both southbound lanes, careened off the guardrail on the opposite side, and came to rest sideways in the roadway facing east. Mr. Ball was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured in the crash. A front seat passenger, a 15 year old white female juvenile was also wearing her seatbelt; however, she did sustain non-incapacitating injuries and was transported to Holston Valley Medical Center by Sullivan County E.M.S. Two back seat passengers, Adam C. Jones and a second 15 year old white female juvenile were not seat belted and were subsequently ejected during the crash. Miraculously, both only sustained non-incapacitating injuries and were transported by Sullivan County E.M.S. Mr. Jones was transported to Holston Valley Medical Center and the juvenile was transported to Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mr. Ball was cited for Failure to Maintain Control of his Vehicle and Failure to Comply with the Financial Responsibility Law (No Insurance). Southbound Interstate 81 was temporarily shut down while the crash was being investigated but has since been reopened. The occupants of this vehicle were extremely lucky to have walked away from this crash with the limited injuries incurred. Had seatbelts been worn by the back seat passengers, it is highly likely that they would not have been injured at all. As it stands, however, they are fortunate to be alive. The Kingsport Police Department would like to take this opportunity to remind all occupants of motor vehicles to wear their seatbelts at all times. It is the law, but more importantly, it might just save a life. For additional information, please contact: P.I.O. Thomas M. Patton K.P.D.
