General Narrative |
New information has surfaced in an ongoing investigation into a traffic crash that occurred on November 30, 2013 at 4:15 PM.
The previous report, based on a preliminary investigation of facts known and evidence available at the time of the crash, indicated that two vehicles were involved. However, from the beginning, there have been several factors that simply did not add up; therefore, the K.P.D. Traffic Unit has kept this case open and has continued to actively investigate. Two major updates are included in this release: 1) The 17 year old driver of the 1989 GMC Jimmy who was previously reported to have sustained life-threatening injuries has now died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. The Kingsport Police Department was notified on the afternoon on December 5th, that he died at Holston Valley Medical Center on December 4, 2013 at approximately 11:50 AM. 2) Further investigation has identified a third vehicle as being involved in, and solely responsible for, the crash. The following are the findings of the investigation: On November 30, 2013 at approximately 4:15 PM, Kingsport Police Patrol Officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries on Lynn Garden Drive at the intersection of Echo Avenue in Kingsport. Due to the extent of injuries, the K.P.D. Traffic Unit was called to the scene to investigate the crash. A 1989 GMC Jimmy driven by a 17 year old juvenile (name will not be released by K.P.D.) was northbound on Lynn Garden Drive approaching Echo Avenue. A 1991 Chevy S-10 driven by Jerry Wayne Patrick was also northbound on Lynn Garden Drive, but had pulled over onto the shoulder for a moment ahead of the GMC. Just as the GMC passed, the Chevy pulled from the shoulder in an attempt to make an illegal U-Turn and struck the GMC in the passenger’s side. The impact sent the GMC into a clockwise yaw across the center lane and into the oncoming southbound lanes directly into the path of a southbound 2009 Pontiac G6 driven by Elesha H. Byrd. Ms. Byrd received serious but non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Holston Valley Medical Center by Sullivan County E.M.S. She remained hospitalized for several days but has since been released. The 17 year old juvenile received critical life-threatening injuries and was transported to Holston Valley Medical Center by Sullivan County E.M.S. He remained hospitalized for several days; however, on December 4, 2013 at approximately 11:50 AM, he succumbed to his injuries and died as a result of trauma sustained in the crash. Mr. Patrick was not injured in the crash. This investigation is still ongoing, and charges are pending. For additional information, please contact: P.I.O. Thomas M. Patton K.P.D.
