General Narrative |
A juvenile pedestrian was struck by a vehicle when she crossed against the traffic signal.
On February 10, 2014 at approximately 3:00 PM, the Kingsport Police Department was notified of a traffic crash involving a pedestrian on East Center Street at the intersection with Park Street in Kingsport. K.P.D. Patrol Officers, supplemented by the Traffic Unit, responded to the scene. The subsequent investigation revealed that a maroon 2006 Chevy Uplander minivan was eastbound on East Center Street approaching Park Street. This intersection is controlled by a traffic signal, and the minivan had a green light. A 14 year old white female pedestrian was preparing to cross East Center Street at the Park Street intersection. The pedestrian observed that the crosswalk had a visible No Crossing sign, but she thought it was clear, so she attempted to cross anyway. The pedestrian failed to yield to the traffic in the roadway and stepped into the path of the oncoming minivan. She was struck by the minivan, causing her to ricochet off the vehicle and strike her head on the roadway. The juvenile pedestrian was transported to Holston Valley Medical Center by Sullivan County E.M.S. for treatment of serious, but non-life threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing by the K.P.D. Traffic Unit. For additional information, please contact: Thomas M. Patton, Public Information Officer K.P.D.
