15 people have graduated from the Kingsport Police Department’s most recent class of the highly acclaimed Citizens Police Academy.
The Kingsport Police Department began the Citizens Police Academy in 1993 and to date has conducted 34 classes with 553 graduates. This most recent class met on Monday and Tuesday evenings during the month of October. Class topics included: 1) Welcome, Orientation, Justice Center Tour 2) Collision and D.U.I. Investigations 3) Crime Scene Investigations 4) Explosive Ordinance Disposal (The Bomb Squad) 5) The Police K-9 6) Traffic Stops and Building Searches 7) Defensive Tactics and the Use of Force 8) S.W.A.T. (Special Weapons and Tactics) The members of Class #34 were presented with their certificates of graduation on November 5, 2013 at 7:00 PM at the meeting of the Kingsport Board of Mayor and Aldermen. The included photo was taken at the K.P.D. Firing Range following a demonstration of the capabilities of the S.W.A.T. Team. K.P.D. holds a Citizens Academy class at least once a year with the primary goal being to foster an improved relationship between the community and the police department. The department envisions that graduates will gain an understanding of the operation of the police department and develop an awareness and appreciation of the various challenges and decisions faced every day by Kingsport Police Officers.
