KPD e-News Release: Suspect in Sunday’s Convenience Store Robbery in Custody
GENERAL NARRATIVE |
A suspect is in custody in the Sunday afternoon robbery of Golda’s Mart in Kingsport. Immediately after the robbery, Detective Justin McConnell of the Kingsport Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division began interviewing witnesses, analyzing evidence, and actively pursuing leads. James E. Dockery was quickly developed as a suspect, and a local bulletin was issued with instructions for area law enforcement officials to be on the lookout for him.
On October 13, 2014 at approximately 1:30 PM, Officer Matt McGuire of the K.P.D. Traffic Unit was conducting routine duties in the area of South John B. Dennis Highway, when he observed a white male jump over the barrier fence running between Stewball Circle and South John B. Dennis Highway. Officer McGuire lost sight of the individual in the overgrown terrain. Not immediately recognizing the individual, but finding his behavior suspicious, Officer McGuire went to investigate. He soon found the individual lying on the ground next to a tree. When the individual saw Officer McGuire, he rose to his feet and surrendered, saying, “You got me.” At this point, Officer McGuire recognized him from the bulletin as James E. Dockery. Apparently, Mr. Dockery jumped over the fence and hid when he saw the police cruiser, because he mistakenly thought the officer was looking for him, when in fact he was just driving by. Mr. Dockery was arrested without further incident and transported to jail where he is being charged with Aggravated Robbery. As originally released: On October 12, 2014 at approximately 3:30 PM, Kingsport Central Dispatch was notified of an armed robbery that had just occurred at Golda’s Mart, a convenience store located at 813 North Eastman Road in Kingsport. Their subsequent investigation revealed the following: A white male suspect entered the store brandishing a dark colored revolver and demanded cash from the clerk. The clerk complied with his demands, and the suspect fled the store with an undisclosed amount of money in a white, early 2000s model Honda Pilot sport utility vehicle with a luggage rack on the roof. No one was injured in the robbery. The suspect is described as a white male, in his mid 20s, approximately 5 feet, 10 inches in height, weighing approximately 180 pounds, with a tattoo on the inside of his left forearm. He should be considered armed and dangerous. A photo of the suspect and his getaway vehicle are included in this release.
