Kingsport Farmers Market hosting Agriculture Week event
The Kingsport Farmers Market is excited to announce it will be hosting Agriculture Week for elementary school children on May 14.
The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Second graders from Kingsport City Schools will rotate through a variety of educational stations – grocery bag coloring, flavored water tasting, cattle farming, bee keeping, and watershed and soil analysis.
Children will also get to participate in a physical education activity at the nearby Carousel Park.
The event is a partnership between the Kingsport Farmers Market, Kingsport City Schools, Kingsport Parks and Recreation and the Washington County Soil District.
Learning about agriculture is important for students of all ages, as it provides them with information on where their food comes, the journey from farm to table and the processes involved in producing various types of food.
“In an increasingly urbanized world, understanding the fundamentals of agriculture—how our food is produced and its impact on our world—is more important than ever,” said Special Event and Cultural Arts Manager Kristie Leonard. “Agricultural education equips students with the knowledge to be responsible consumers, environmentally conscious citizens, and potential contributors to the agriculture industry.”
