If you’d like to make a difference in your hometown, the City of Kingsport is in need of volunteers to serve on five of its advisory boards and commissions. The boards and commissions in need of volunteers include:
The Cultural Arts Commission meets at city hall on the second Friday in February, April, June, August, October and December. Each member has a three-year term length and serves as the advisory committee to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen on public art policies and guidelines.
The Kingsport Public Library Commission is responsible for library oversight, assisting in the creation of an annual budget and promoting the library to the greater Kingsport community. The commission also accepts grants, gifts and monetary donations on behalf of the library. Members serve a three-year term and meet periodically throughout the year.
The Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee studies the needs and wants of the community when it comes to parks and recreation and is responsible for recommending programs, facilities, special equipment and sites to improve the leisure time of Kingsport residents. Members serve a three-year term and meet at least 10 times a year at various recreational facilities.
The PETWORKS Board of Directors is charged with offering advice on the operation of the animal shelter, specifically to upholding its mission of sheltering, caring for and rehoming adoptable animals. The board meets at noon on the fourth Thursday of each month at Kingsport City Hall.
The Tree Advisory Board offers advice and makes recommendations on the planting and care of trees on city property. Member term length is two years and the board meets at 9 a.m. on the third Thursday, every other month at the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce.
To apply for any of these boards and commissions, simply visit ServeKingsport (www.servekingsport.com) and answer the short questionnaire. Here you will be asked why you wish to volunteer, your previous volunteering experience and which boards and commissions interest you.

The City of Kingsport is implementing a new automated system for the Kingsport Police Department’s non-emergency phone number in an attempt to better direct your questions and concerns to the appropriate department.
Kingsport Police Department’s non-emergency phone number is 423-246-9111 and its new automated system is scheduled to go into effect August 26. When residents call the non-emergency phone number, an automated system will provide a series of department options for residents to select, depending on their issue or concern.
This new automated system is being implemented to relieve some of the call volume made to Kingsport’s dispatchers, allowing them to focus more on true emergency calls.
The non-emergency number will include the following menu options:
NOTE – Residents should call 911 for true emergencies only, when there is an immediate threat to life, health or property, including:
This guidance is intended to help residents understand when to call 911 and when to use the non-emergency number. Please note these examples are not exhaustive but hopefully provide a helpful outline for common situations.
