SUBJECT:  KPD Investigating Crash with Life-Threatening Injuries

GENERAL NARRATIVE

 

At approximately 17:00 hours on August 26, 2025, the Kingsport Police Department responded to a motor vehicle collision near the 3700 block of Fort Henry Drive. The preliminary investigation into the collision revealed that for reasons unknown, the vehicle involved left the roadway, struck a utility pole on the right side of the roadway, and then rolled down an embankment. It was a single vehicle collision, occupied by a single driver, who was flown via med-flight to Johnson City Medical Center for treatment of potentially life-threatening injuries.

 

The Kingsport Police Department is still investigating the scene to determine the cause of the crash, and the right-hand lane of Fort Henry Drive remains closed at this time. Motorists are asked to drive with caution while recovery crews and law enforcement personnel are working in the area.

Winners announced in annual Storm Drain Art Contest

The City of Kingsport’s Stormwater Department is pleased to announce the winners of this year’s Storm Drain Art Contest.

The winners and the location of their respective storm drains are as follows:

– Trista Demoranville: Memorial Blvd across from Kenwood St intersection.

– Caroline O’Connor: Gibson Mill Rd roundabout.

– Mikaela Pyatte: Ormond St near Johnson Elementary School.

– Haley Ragsdale: Parking lot behind Chamber of Commerce.

– Brenda Salcido: Intersection of Market and Revere

Each artist will receive the paint and materials to start their work the first week of September, and then once complete, a $150 prize.

The contest – now in its eighth year – is a partnership with the city’s stormwater department, the Office of Cultural Arts and Engage Kingsport. The goal of the contest is to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our rivers, stream habitat, and aquatic wildlife.

This year’s contest is sponsored by Barge Design Solutions, CDM Smith, Mattern & Craig and Now or Never Gallery Tattoo.

Kingsport Parks and Recreation offering Kids’ Day Out Camps

The Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department is offering two special Kids’ Day Out camps next month. The camps will be held September 2 and September 12 – the same days as a Kingsport City Schools’ in-service day and parent/teacher conference day, respectively.

The one-day camps will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day at the V.O. Dobbins, Sr. Complex (301 Louis Street).

The cost per child is $10 and the camp is open for ages 6 to 12. The maximum number of registrants is 50. Participants will need to bring lunch and a snack.

The day’s activities will be similar to those found during the normal summer camp program – dodgeball, basketball, kickball, movies, coloring, puzzles, board and card games, crafts and more.

Registration open for Kingsport’s Youth Basketball program

The Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department is now accepting registrations for several of its 2025 Youth Basketball programs.

Participants must live inside Kingsport’s city limits, own city property or attend Kingsport City Schools. Leagues offered include:

  • Bantam (5-6)
  • Pee Wee Boys (7-8)
  • Pee Wee Girls (7-9)
  • Rookie Boys (9-10)
  • Junior Boys (11-12)
  • Junior Girls (10-12)
  • Intermediate Boys (13-14)
  • Intermediate Girls (13-15)
  • Senior Boys (15-17)

Registration is now open for Bantam and the Pee Wee leagues; Rookie Boys and Senior Boys is August 29; and the Junior and Intermediate leagues is October 24.

The season for Bantam, Pee Wee Boys & Girls and Rookie Boys will start October 20 and run through the middle of December. Senior Boys will begin their season November 3 and run into January (weather permitting). The Junior and Intermediate leagues will begin in January and continue through March.

The registration fee is $30 per child and the age determination date is August 15, 2024. After rosters are released, parents will have to go to Wheelhouse and order their jerseys for an additional fee to be determined.

Kingsport offering bicycle safety and fundamentals class

The Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department is offering a four-week program next month aimed at educating children on the fundamentals and safety of bicycling.

The program – called TREADZ – will take place on Mondays from September 8 through September 29 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Kingsport Farmers Market (308 Clinchfield Street). Children ages 2 to 12 can register and the cost is $15 per participant. You will need to bring your own bicycle and helmet.

Hosted in partnership with Reedy Creek Bicycles and Just Ride Bikes & Fitness, the program offers a safe and engaging environment for children to be active, learn, grow, and have fun. TREADZ caters to various skill levels, from beginners learning balance and coordination on balance bikes to older kids mastering advanced riding techniques.

“The TREADZ program encourages physical activity, skill development, and just a general love for biking,” said Program Administrator Jason Wilburn. “With hands-on guidance from our local instructors, the kids will quickly gain confidence while improving their overall health and well-being.”

Kingsport Public Library receives state technology grant

The Kingsport Public Library has been awarded a Training Opportunities for the Public (TOP) grant from the Tennessee State Library and Archives.

The $4,080 TOP grant will be matched with $1,020 in city funds and then used to purchase six portable Wi-Fi hot spots and cover their monthly service fee. Patrons will be able to check out these hotspots from the library’s Fort Henry Mall location and use them to provide Wi-Fi wherever they may need it.

Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett presented library staff with a grant check during an event Thursday afternoon.

“We’re extremely thankful to the Tennessee State Library and Archives for awarding us this grant,” said Library Manager Stephanie Griffin. “These funds will allow us to provide much-needed technology to our patrons, some of whom may not have readily accessible internet access at all times.”

The Training Opportunities for the Public (TOP) Grant is available for public libraries to be able to provide services for their communities. Grant funds are available for training, hot spots, solar charging tables and internal connections.

Kingsport offering Boxing for Fitness program

Boxing can be a new and exciting way to get in shape and stay healthy. Not only can boxing improve your heart health and boost your endurance, but the sport also improves balance, helps with weight management and enhances your mental health.

Kingsport’s Parks and Recreation Department is offering its first-ever Boxing for Fitness program next month at the V.O. Dobbins, Sr. Complex. Classes will be taught by a certified instructor and will take place from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays from September 10 through October 15.

This class is a beginner fitness class for children ages 12 to 18 with a specialization in boxing. Participants will be working with the fundamentals and foundations of boxing and there will be no contact between the participants.

“Boxing is not your typical fitness activity, which is why you should consider signing up for the program today,” said Program Coordinator Michael Morris. “Boxing is both rewarding and enjoyable, as you improve your cardio, your strength and your reflexes all at the same time.”

The registration fee is $50 per person for city residents and $60 per person for non-city residents. Gloves are included with the registration fee.
