NEWS RELEASE | |||
SUBJECT: | Applications Now Being Accepted for a Law Enforcement Career with the Kingsport Police Department (3rd Notice)
DATE: | October 2, 2018 | ||
GENERAL NARRATIVE | |||
There are less than two weeks remaining to apply for the Kingsport Police Department’s upcoming Fall 2018 Police Applicant Testing session. See previously released information below for details:
The City of Kingsport Human Resources Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Police Officer. The Kingsport Police Department is hoping to hire several new officers out of this application process to fill any existing and upcoming vacancies. Applications are being accepted from September 15, 2018 until no later than October 14, 2018. Individuals who are interested in a career in law enforcement are encouraged to apply. All applicants must be a United States citizen and either already be at least 21 years of age or be turning 21 by no later than May 1, 2019 (six months after the test date). Applicants are asked to only submit their application once, as weeding out duplicate applications hampers efficiency. All applications must be submitted online using the following link: https://www.governmentjobs.com/Careers/Kingsport Following the October 14th deadline, all applicants will receive a confirmation email, as well as a letter by traditional mail, containing further instructions regarding the upcoming Police Applicant Testing procedures. All applicants will undergo a series of assessments, beginning with a written examination on the morning of Thursday, November 1, 2018. The written examination will be administered at the Civic Auditorium, located at 1550 Fort Henry Drive in Kingsport. While not an absolute requirement, applicants are strongly encouraged to invest in the Stanard and Associates National Police Officer Selection Test “Online POST Study Guide” and “Online POST Practice Test” to assist them in preparing for this examination. These online study aids are currently priced very reasonably at $5 and $15 respectively and are available for purchase at the following link: https://www.ApplyToServe.com/Study Applicants should take note that the current written examination used for Police Applicant Testing is obtained from a completely different vendor than the City of Kingsport used prior to 2018; therefore, other study guides that may have been recommended in the past and obtained and utilized by applicants to prepare for former tests taken prior to 2018 may not be applicable to the current examination. Applicants who successfully pass the written examination will advance forward to a physical agility evaluation that same afternoon at 1:00 PM. The physical agility evaluation will consist of a timed one-mile run and a timed roughly one-quarter-mile obstacle course designed to measure fitness, strength, agility, and endurance as related to the duties of a Police Officer. Applicants are also strongly encouraged to participate in a voluntary practice physical agility evaluation and question and answer session. This session will take place on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at 1:00 PM at Domtar Park, located at 1414 Riverport Road in Kingsport. Individuals must have an application on file and sign a waiver of liability in order to be eligible to participate in this practice session. Those applicants with the highest combined scores on the written examination and physical agility evaluation will then move forward to a series of interviews, beginning with an interview panel and ultimately an interview with the Chief of Police, to further vet the candidates and determine the final selections. The final selections will also be subject to a medical examination, psychological evaluation, and a thorough background check prior to actual hiring. The current starting salary for Police Officer Trainee is $15.92 per hour or $33,119 annually. Applicants who are already certified law enforcement officers may be eligible for a salary adjustment to compensate for prior experience if certain criteria are met. Academy training and all essential equipment including uniforms, firearms, body armor, and duty gear are provided by the department. K.P.D. also issues take-home police cruisers to officers meeting specific residency requirements. City of Kingsport employee benefits include direct payroll deposit; paid vacation, holiday, and sick leave; employee life insurance; optional supplemental and dependent life insurance; long-term disability; health insurance; optional dental insurance; flexible spending accounts; ICMA RC 401 retirement; and optional ICMA RC 457 retirement. For additional information regarding the application process, please call the City of Kingsport Human Resources Department at 423-229-9401. For additional information regarding a law enforcement career at the Kingsport Police Department, please call Lieutenant Chris Tincher with the K.P.D. Professional Standards Unit at 423-343-9805. |

NEWS RELEASE | ||||
SUBJECT: | Kingsport Police Celebrate National Safe Communities America Day by Encouraging Citizens to Register for City’s Emergency Alert System
DATE: | October 1, 2018 | |||
GENERAL NARRATIVE | ||||
The Kingsport Police Department is once again recognizing National Safe Communities America Day and celebrating the esteemed certification held by the City of Kingsport and the surrounding Sullivan County as an Internationally Accredited Safe Community.
This year, in recognition of National Safe Communities America Day, the Kingsport Police Department is encouraging all area residents, who have not already done so, to sign up for our area-wide Emergency Alert System. The City of Kingsport utilizes an Emergency Alert System to send official, real-time alerts to the public with information about potential life-saving actions they may need to take during critical incidents, natural or man-made disasters, and other emergencies to keep themselves and their families safe. Virtually all area landline telephone numbers (provided by major carriers) are already automatically subscribed for this service; however, cellular telephones and/or email addresses must be manually registered. Many citizens no longer have landline telephones and rely exclusively on cellular telephones; moreover, most of those who do still have landline telephones lead busy lives and might not be at home at the time an emergency alert came into their landline telephone. All area residents are encouraged to take a few seconds this week to register their cellular telephones and email addresses to this invaluable service. To subscribe, citizens can visit the City of Kingsport’s website at www.KingsportTN.gov and click on the “ALERTS” tab. Another option is to go directly to the Emergency Alerts Registration Page found at https://KingsportSullivanTN.OnTheAlert.com. Emergency Alerts may be sent to and received by subscribers by automated voice call, text message, email, or a combination of all three; therefore, subscribers are asked to provide as much contact information as possible. Because of the unforeseen nature of some emergencies, no one can fully guarantee that every citizen will receive a notification every single time. As such, citizens are urged to keep themselves informed by monitoring other public safety warning and information systems (such as television and radio) and avoid calling 9-1-1 during critical incidents just to ask a question (unless they are personally experiencing or witnessing an emergency and in need of immediate assistance). Another useful source for information is the Kingsport Police Department’s Blog which can be found at www.KingsportPDBlog.com. Citizens can visit that blog and enter their email address to subscribe. Doing so will enable them to receive the exact same K.P.D. News Releases disseminated to traditional media outlets at the exact same time they receive it. This same information can also be obtained by following K.P.D. on either FaceBook or Twitter. Back to the original topic of Safe Communities America, the first official National Safe Communities America Day was observed two years ago on October 5, 2016. On that day, the City of Kingsport unveiled a bronze plaque in honor of its designation as a Safe Community. This plaque is permanently affixed to the front of the Kingsport Justice Center. Last year on National Safe Communities America Day, held on October 4, 2017, the Safe Communities America Organization celebrated its 10-year anniversary. Traditionally scheduled for the first Wednesday in October, National Safe Communities America Day takes place this year on October 3, 2018. The City of Kingsport and the surrounding Sullivan County were first designated as an Internationally Accredited Safe Community in 2012 and then later reaccredited in January 2018. Our community is one of only 19 Internationally Accredited Safe Communities across the entire United States and remains the only one so designated within the State of Tennessee. The effort to initially obtain, and then continue to maintain, this esteemed designation is led by the Safe Communities Sullivan County Coalition which was developed by the Kingsport Area Safety Council (KASC)***. KASC has been serving this community for over 70 years with the mission of enhancing the quality of life through the effective promotion of safety and health on the highway, in the workplace, in the home, and in the schools. The Safe Communities America model engages local partners who care about safety, uses data to identify leading causes of injury and death in the community, makes a plan to address the issues using proven methods, and measures success while continuing to make improvements. Safe Communities America has long been an accreditation program of the National Safety Council; however, the program is in the process of transitioning to a new (yet to be named) parent organization, with the ultimate goal of providing a wider range of resources to participating communities. In the interim, the University of Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center is facilitating the program. Being designated as a Safe Community does not by any means indicate that the community never experiences any safety related issues. It simply means that the community has systems in place to quickly pinpoint these issues as they inevitably arise, and when they are identified, the community comes together in a concerted effort to address them.
