Beginning Oct. 17, the Nature Center balcony at Bays Mountain Park will be closed for improvements.
The balcony is the original, 1971 balcony and while the foundation and flooring is in good shape, the walls are in a state of disrepair and are in need of some attention.
Inland Construction will be mobilizing on Oct. 17 and during this week the company will be power-washing the concrete in preparation for the sealant. Once the concrete is resurfaced, Red Cedar will be installed over the concrete to prevent weathering.
Bays Mountain Park will close off the walkway behind the Nature Center beginning the week of Oct. 24. Scaffolding will be used to work on the underside of the balcony, but will be removed on Friday evenings. The walkway will reopen for pedestrians on the weekends.
Inland Construction is estimating the improvements will be complete by Christmas. Funding for this project comes from $125,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.

The Kingsport Neighborhood Commission and the Kingsport Police Department want to remind everyone to perform three simple acts any time you leave your vehicle unattended and before going to bed each night.
Remove valuables from your vehicle, take your keys with you and always be sure to lock your vehicle. By doing so you greatly improve your chances of not being a victim of auto burglary and vehicle theft.
The Kingsport Police Department reports that in nearly every auto burglary and vehicle theft reported to them, the vehicle had been left unlocked, often with the key inside and valuables left in plain sight.
Earlier this year, two rings of criminals were responsible for nearly 50 motor vehicle thefts and over 120 auto burglaries within the City of Kingsport.
“None of these vehicles were forcibly entered,” said Tom Patton, public information officer for the KPD. “The criminals did not use any specialized tools, skills or high-tech gadgetry to access these vehicles. They simply opened unlocked doors.”
Which is why the KNC and the KPD are launching their “Remove. Take. Lock.” initiative to remind residents to follow these simple steps to better protect their vehicles and valuables. It only takes a minute and could make the difference between keeping your valuables and losing your vehicle.
“One of the worst feelings in the world is to walk out your front door and realize your vehicle has been stolen. It’s even worse when you realize you left your vehicle unlocked and the keys inside,” said Tiffany Hickman with the Kingsport Neighborhood Commission. “Our hope is this campaign will help folks, so they’re not a victim to this type of crime.”
Bays Mountain Park will soon provide a new home to two bobcat kittens. Park Ranger Rhonda Goins is on her way to Montana this weekend to pick up the park’s newest inhabitants, two young bobcat brothers.
The bobcats have been described as ‘best buds’ and ‘very sweet’ so park staff are eager to start working with the two brothers. Before being placed with Bays Mountain Park, the bobcats were raised in captivity in Montana. They were born at an accredited zoological facility on May 3, 2022, and were two of a litter of four. Their two sisters will be serving as animal ambassadors at another facility.
“We are very excited to house two new bobcats at Bays Mountain,” said Chief Ranger Tyler Wicks. “It is an amazing opportunity to educate the public about this elusive and secretive cat that is native to our area. We hope they will live long and happy lives here like all of the bobcats we have housed previously.”
Once the bobcats arrive at the park, they will be placed in quarantine while park rangers work to get them accustomed to people and their new environment. Park staff are working on adding several additions to the bobcat habitat to provide both safety and enrichment for the bobcats.
The new bobcats’ names will be announced at a later date. Follow along with the bobcat brothers’ progress on the Bays Mountain Park Facebook page and Instagram.
