Kingsport Parks and Recreation hosting Fishing 101 event

Create a lasting memory with your children or grandchildren by enjoying an evening of fishing at the ponds of Allandale Mansion.

The Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a Fishing Day event at 5:30 p.m. on June 24. Participants are asked to use the barn/pavilion entrance to gain access to the ponds.

The cost to register is $5 and the event is open to people of all ages. Registration is required and no walkups will be allowed. The class includes bait and one instructional session. Participants must supply their own rod.

Bays Mountain Park hosting Quick Yoga sessions this month

Bays Mountain Park is partnering with a local yoga instructor to offer residents Quick Yoga sessions for strength and power in the planetarium this month.

The 45-minute classes will be held at 1 p.m. on June 15 and June 22 and are a special Father’s Day offering for participants ages 16 and up. The cost is $12 per person and class size is limited to 10 people. Participants of all levels are welcome to attend. Wear exercise clothing, bring your own mat and water bottle with a sealable lid.

Join us for a shortened version of Bays Mountain’s Yoga in the Planetarium immersive yoga class. From dawn to dusk, the planetarium will simulate a day’s journey in 30 minutes while we do a quick flow of Sun Salutations, Warrior series, and balance poses.

Concentric, eccentric and isometric contractions will be featured so that students can work to optimize both their strength and balance as well as their mobility. Finally, we conclude with a relaxing starry night sky for the remaining 10 minutes of the class.

City of Kingsport announces summer street resurfacing program

More than $10 million worth of paving scheduled to take place this year

The City of Kingsport is continuing its three-prong approach towards street resurfacing this year by allocating $3.8 million to repave in the Fairacres, Tellico Hills and Highland neighborhoods, addressing several of the “worst” roads in town and continuing with paving preservation efforts.

Additionally, paving work will be bolstered with $2.5 million in MTPO (Metropolitan Transportation Planning Organization) funds and $4.5 million from the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

In total, Kingsport will experience approximately $10.8 million in street resurfacing work this calendar year.

Work began earlier this year in the Fairacres, Tellico Hills and Highland neighborhoods and it will continue throughout the summer.

The $2.5 million in MTPO funds will go towards repaving portions of Fall Creek Road, Cooks Valley Road, Moreland Drive and the Hawkins County portion of Netherland Inn Road. The contract for this work is currently out for bid and if TDOT concurs with the bids, Kingsport anticipates the paving to begin this fall and finish in the spring of 2025.

Finally, TDOT plans to begin its summer paving program with Fort Henry Drive (State Route 36) from Eastman Road to Summerville Road, as well as the Airport Parkway (State Route 357).

Since 2017, Kingsport has allocated and/or spent $16.9 million on street resurfacing work, repaving just over 101 miles of roads.

General areas paved in these years include Colonial Heights, Lynn Garden, Upper Sevier Terrace, areas near the Tri-Cities airport, Eastern Star and the Tri-Cities Crossing and Fort Henry Drive between the John B. Dennis Highway and Fort Patrick Henry Dam.

During those same years, the Tennessee Department of Transportation has spent $12.6 million on street resurfacing work in Kingsport, repaving 22 miles of roads, including ones on Industry Drive and the John B. Dennis Highway.

For the past eight years, Kingsport has used a data-driven approach to street resurfacing. First, by ranking all city streets from 0 to 100 based on condition and then creating an annual paving plan where the lowest ranked streets are given priority.

By following this program, Kingsport has repaved on average 17 miles of streets every year since 2017.

The City of Kingsport is responsible for maintaining approximately 500 miles of streets within the city limits. The Tennessee Department of Transportation oversees the repair and paving of state highways and federal interstates within Kingsport’s borders, including Stone Drive, Fort Henry Drive, Center Street, Lynn Garden Drive and the John B. Dennis Highway.

Main Street Rebuild – Main & Sullivan Street Intersection

The City of Kingsport will begin final improvements in the vicinity of the Main Street/Sullivan Street intersection on Monday, June 10.  Summers Taylor will be the contractors performing this work for the city.

The final work on Sullivan Street includes demolition and rebuild of existing sidewalk and curb and gutter on the northern side/downtown in-bound traffic lane. This concrete work will take approximately two weeks and the in-bound lane will be closed for this duration. Out-bound traffic from downtown will still be allowed during this concrete work.

After the concrete work is complete, both lanes of Sullivan Street will require closure to allow for asphalt paving and asphalt striping/markings. The paving and marking work is expected to take approximately one week.                                                                                      

The construction zones and detours (when and where applicable) will be marked by signs, and flaggers will be directing traffic when necessary.  Drivers are asked to use caution in the area during this time.

Kingsport Parks & Recreation hosting inclusive volleyball session

The Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department is hosting its first-ever Inclusive Volleyball session at the V.O. Dobbins Sr. Complex.

The free event will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on June 15 and is open to people ages 6 and up. Come out and enjoy a fun game of volleyball with various net levels and adaptations.

The volleyball session is part of the department’s A.S.P.I.R.E. (Adaptive: Sports Programs Inclusive Recreation Experiences) program. Adaptive programs are for people with disabilities or physical limitations and are designed to ensure fair and equal competition among participants.

Though the event is free, Kingsport Parks and Recreation officials are asking folks to register to know approximately how many people will be showing up.

Kingsport Aquatic Center hosts “World’s Largest Swim Lesson”

The Kingsport Aquatic Center is once again participating in this year’s World’s Largest Swim Lesson – an event created by the World Waterpark Association to promote the importance of swim safety worldwide.

The swim lesson will take place at the Kingsport Aquatic Center at 11 a.m. on June 20. The event is free with a KAC daily admission.

“One of our goals here at the Kingsport Aquatic Center is to teach water safety to all age groups,” said Aquatics Program Coordinator Madison Gump. “This event allows us to bring in a larger number of individuals at once to show them what water safety is all about and why it’s so important.”

Swimming is a life-saving skill for children and a vital tool to prevent drowning – the second leading cause of unintended, injury-related death for U.S. children ages 1-14. Research shows risk of drowning can be reduced by 88 percent if children participate in formal swimming lessons between the ages of 1-4.

Yet, a survey conducted by the American Red Cross in 2014 found that more than half of Americans (54 percent) either can’t swim or don’t have all of the basic swimming skills.

Allandale Mansion hosting Board Game Day event

Allandale Mansion is hosting a game day event later this month, where friends and family can get together at the mansion and enjoy a relaxing afternoon playing their favorite card or board game.

The Board Game Day event will be held at Allandale Mansion from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on June 18. Come out and explore the mansion’s collection of games or bring along one of your own to enjoy. Bring a friend or come ready to meet up with other players, and feel free to bring your own lunch or enjoy a provided snack.

Kingsport Public Library offering Safe Sitter Class

The Kingsport Public Library will be hosting a Safe Sitter class on June 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The program is presented by Ballad Health and is sponsored by Healthy Kingsport.

Rising 6th through 8th grade students will have the opportunity to learn beginner babysitting safety and first aid from trained professionals during this six-hour class. Lunch will be provided, and students will have several breaks throughout the day.

There is no cost for the class, though registration is required, and space is limited. The program will include the following topics:

Safety Skills

Students learn how to prevent unsafe situations and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies.

Child Care Skills

Students learn tips to manage behavior that will help them stay in control of themselves and the children in their care. Students also learn the ages and stages of child development, as well as practice diapering.

First Aid & Rescue Skills

Learning skills such as choking rescue and CPR is often students’ favorite part of the class. Students also learn a system to help them assess and respond to injuries and illnesses.

Life & Business Skills

The ability to screen jobs, discuss fees, and greet employers will set students up for success now and in the future. Students practice these skills through various role plays.
