| SUBJECT: | K.P.D. to Participate in National Drug Take-Back Day Initiative on Saturday April 22nd(Reminder) | ||

| GENERAL NARRATIVE | |||
| On Saturday, April 22nd, 2023 from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM, the Kingsport Police Department will be participating in a community drug take-back initiative. This initiative is sponsored by the United Way of Greater Kingsport, the Kingsport Police Department, and the Sullivan County Anti-Drug Coalition. K.P.D. will be staffing three different drop-off locations in Kingsport. They include:
· Dobyns-Bennett High School (1 Tribe Way) · Food City (300 Clinchfield Street) · Food City (1205 North Eastman Road) Between now and Saturday, April 22nd, all area residents are encouraged to go through their medicine cabinets and inventory their medications. Now is the time to safely dispose of any leftover, expired, or otherwise unwanted medications. This community drug take-back event is open to the public and is a prime opportunity and the preferred method to safely dispose of any medications that are no longer needed. The U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) sponsors two National Prescription Drug Take-Back Days each year, in April and October. National Prescription Drug Take-Back Days aim to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications. While the DEA does recognize these two annual days, at the Kingsport Police Department, we like to think of every day as Drug Take-Back Day. K.P.D. has been participating in drug take-back initiatives since 2010 and installed a permanent drug collection box in the lobby of the Kingsport Justice Center, located at 200 Shelby Street in Downtown Kingsport, in 2012. Our box is accessible 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week, 365 days-a-year. To date, K.P.D. has been able to safely incinerate over 20,000 pounds (10 tons) of leftover, unwanted, or expired medications. The goals of this program are to keep drugs off the street, prevent overdoses and accidental poisonings, and avoid environmental contamination. Drugs that can be accepted include prescription, over the counter (OTC), vitamins, herbals, supplements, and veterinary medications. Items that are not accepted through this program include needles or sharps, biohazard materials, and illegal drugs. Libraries are more than just a place where books are found. These essential buildings provide internet and technology access, serve as a gathering place for the community and offer educational classes, crafting events, movie and game nights, book clubs and lectures.
The Kingsport Public Library is encouraging everyone to visit the library this week in recognition of National Public Library Week. First sponsored in 1958, National Public Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries of all types across the country.
This year’s observance takes place during the week of April 23 and is an excellent time to “check out” all the resources you can find within the Kingsport Public Library, including thousands of fiction and non-fiction books, audiobooks, DVDs, video games, 3-D printers and so much more.
The theme for this year’s observance is “There’s more to the story.” Now is the perfect time to think about the essential role libraries, librarians and other workers play in transforming lives and strengthening communities.
Whether people visit in person or virtually, libraries offer endless opportunities to transform lives through education and lifelong learning. This National Library Week, the public can show their appreciation and support for libraries by visiting the library’s website (www.kingsportlibrary.org), following them on social media and using the hashtag #NationalLibraryWeek.
The City of Kingsport has received an award from the American Planning Association’s Economic Development Division for the redevelopment of the greater Kingsport Press site and nearby properties.
Specifically, Kingsport won in the Innovation in Economic Development category at the APA’s annual conference held April 2 in Philadelphia. This award category is reserved for projects or programs that are creative and establish new pathways in addressing unique economic development needs.
“A tremendous amount of work has gone into redeveloping the Kingsport Press site and surrounding properties over the years and we’re truly thankful that our city is being recognized on a national level for our efforts,” said Steven Bower, economic development specialist for the city.
Kingsport received the award for its work on the redevelopment of the Dobyns-Taylor warehouse and the greater Kingsport Press property, including the Food City shopping center, the Kingsport Farmers Market, the Kingsport Carousel and nearby Town Park Lofts.
According to the APA, economic development consists of policies and actions which strive to improve the overall quality of life for a community or region by raising its standard of living, reducing inequality and using resources in a sustainable manner.
