Kingsport needs volunteers for advisory boards, commissions
The City of Kingsport is in need of volunteers to serve on seven of its advisory boards and commissions. If you’re interested in making a difference in your hometown, the following boards and commissions are in need of volunteers:
- Board of Zoning Appeals
- Community Development Advisory Committee
- Construction Board of Adjustments and Appeals
- Demolition by Neglect Committee
- Gateway Review Commission
- Historic Zoning Commission
- Neighborhood Commission
The Board of Zoning Appeals meets the first Thursday of each month at noon and consists of five members with each one serving a five-year term. The board is charged with hearing and deciding on appeals to zoning orders and requests for variances to zoning ordinances.
The Community Development Advisory Committee serves as an advisory body to the city manager and is charged with assessing the needs of the community when it comes to essential services and housing rehabilitation. The committee meets at city hall on the second Friday of each month at 1 p.m.
The Construction Board of Adjustments and Appeals hears and renders decisions on cases for aggrieved parties when the city building official rejects or refuses to approve or issue a building permit. Term limits vary and meetings are scheduled only as needed.
The Demolition by Neglect Committee investigates any charges involving a historic landmark threatened with demolition by neglect. Meetings are scheduled only as needed.
The Gateway Review Commission is charged with developing a land management policy and providing guidance on gateway corridor guidelines during the development process. The commission meets on the third Friday of each month at 10 a.m.
The Historic Zoning Commission is responsible for preserving and protecting historic structures within the city limits. Members serve a 5-year term and meet on the second Monday of each month at 1:30 p.m.
The Neighborhood Advisory Commission meets on the last Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. and consists of 12 members with each one serving a three-year term. The commission aims to strengthen neighborhoods, provide a strong communication channel between residents and the city and offer advice to solve problems within the neighborhoods.
