Kingsport re-establishes recycling drop-off site
The City of Kingsport has re-established a recycling drop-off site at the Kingsport Civic Auditorium.
The site is located at the rear of the property and can be accessed from Legion Drive via E. Center Street or Auditorium Drive. Cardboard, mixed paper, tin and aluminum will be accepted.
Sullivan County will manage this site, as it does others across the county, including ones in Colonial Heights, Sullivan Gardens, on Industry Drive and on Brookside Drive.
“We’re pleased to be able to bring back a popular drop-off site for the residents of Kingsport,” said Deputy City Manager Ryan McReynolds. “When we paused our curbside recycling two years ago, it took away the convenience factor of recycling for our citizens. Now, we’re hoping to bring back some of that convenience.”
Kingsport paused its curbside recycling service two years ago after the market essentially dropped out on mixed paper, thus making it economically unfeasible to continue the service. In the past, a drop-off site was located at the civic auditorium, but it was removed to accommodate the construction of the Dobyns-Bennett High School STEM building.
In addition to re-establishing the civic auditorium site, Kingsport is taking a second step to improve recycling options within the city.
Kingsport is planning to move the existing drop-off site on Industry Drive further down the road and expand it to be a full-service, fully-manned facility capable to accepting not only recyclable materials, but also yard waste, household waste and construction debris.
This site would have normal operating hours and only be for the citizens of Kingsport. Contractor waste would not be accepted. Kingsport hopes to have this site up and running within the coming year.
Kingsport also has 5 other recycling locations:
- 1921 Brookside Lane (at City Landfill)
- 609 Industry Drive (across from Wastewater Plant)
- 101 Lakecrest Drive (in Colonial Heights near Ingles)
- Sullivan Gardens School
- Indian Springs School
