Kingsport giving away free tree seedlings

City News

In an effort to make the Model City just a little bit greener, the city’s stormwater division plans to distribute 200 tree seedlings to the public later this month – all free of charge.

“From our standpoint, trees are good. They absorb storm water resulting in less runoff within the city,” said Amanda McMullen, stormwater quality control technician. “The more trees we can get planted in the city, the better.”

Two-hundred trees have been ordered – 50 each of Sugar Maple, Redbud, White Dogwood and Scarlet Oak. The seedlings will be distributed at Keep Kingsport Beautiful’s garden seminar at the Kingsport Public Library on March 17 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Limit 10 per person.

McMullen will also be set up in Glen Bruce Park on March 19 from 9 a.m. to noon distributing tree seedlings. If you cannot make either event, you can call McMullen at 423-229-9325 and schedule a time to pick up tree seedlings at the city’s Water Services Center (Old Pet Dairy building) at 1113 Konnarock Road.

The U.S. Forest Service reports that every dollar spent on planting and caring for a community tree yields benefits that are two to five times that investment—benefits that include cleaner air, lower energy costs, improved water quality and storm water control and increased property values.

For more than 35 years, Kingsport has been recognized as a Tree City USA for its forestry efforts, which includes maintaining over 12,000 trees and 15 acres of landscaping within the city. Kingsport also maintains a Level II Arboretum Certification that requires labeling and mapping of more than 60 tree species within Borden Park.

Beloved Bobcat Kirby Has Passed

City News

Bays Mountain Park & Planetarium is deeply saddened to announce the death of Kirby the bobcat. Kirby died peacefully in his sleep under the care of naturalist staff in his enclosure during the morning of March 10, 2022.

At 18 years old, Kirby lived a full and healthy life, far outliving the average lifespan of bobcats in the wild. Kirby was originally rescued from Greenleaf State Park in Oklahoma at 5-weeks old. He and his brother Hoover both suffered with toxoplasmosis as kittens which left Kirby with some vision loss. Kirby was transferred to Bays Mountain Park in 2010 from the Wildlife Center at Crosstimbers Ranch in Texas.

Since Kirby was raised in captivity, he was always friendly with staff and even playful at times. He was very vocal with his caretakers, always letting them know how he felt. He loved to meow at feeding time, especially when he smelled some of his favorite foods. Kirby was known to appreciate his solitude, often shying away from large crowds. This made Kirby’s public appearances all the more valuable to those park guests fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of him.

Kirby will be deeply missed by all of the staff and by his many admiring visitors, but we find solace in that his life ended naturally and without pain.

While Kirby’s large personality can never be replaced, the park will begin the search to find a bobcat in need of a new home to live in Kirby’s now vacant enclosure.

Report Non-Emergency

To report a non-emergency, please use the new ConnectKingsport app.

ConnectKingsport is the app for everything Kingsport! From potholes and damaged street signs to other local issues that need attention, ConnectKingsport makes reporting an issue easier than ever. This app uses GPS to recognize your location and gives you a menu of common quality-of-life conditions to select from. The app also allows you to upload pictures or videos to accompany your request. Residents can track the status of reports they or other members of the community have submitted until the issue is resolved.

You can also use the app to find information about the City of Kingsport with links to the city website, animal services, ongoing events and more. Download the free app today to be a part of making Kingsport a great place to live, work and play!

To download the free app, please search for it on the Apple App Store or on Google Play. You can also use the online portal below.

Please note that the use of ConnectKingsport is intended for the reporting of non-emergency issues only. If you need immediate Police or Fire response, please call 911.
