Kingsport Aquatic Center is Hiring Fall Staff

City News

The Kingsport Aquatic Center is preparing for fall and winter swimming season, bringing opportunities for new careers. The Kingsport Aquatic Center is hiring lifeguards, swim lesson instructors, aquatic attendants and gate workers for the indoor facility, which is operational throughout the year.

Beginning September 7th, the Kingsport Aquatic Center will be offering an American Red Cross Lifeguard training class. This is a six day training course for those interested in working as lifeguards at the Kingsport Aquatic Center. This course provides entry-level lifeguards with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies. Other procedures taught are breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illness.

The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training with CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer will take place September 7th – 9th and September 14th – 16th. The course will run Friday night from 4 p.m. – 9 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. The cost is $200 for non-members and $175 for members. With successful completion of this course participants can apply to become a lifeguard at the Kingsport Aquatic Center.

“Our lifeguard positions allow for flexible schedules and a fun work environment,” said Chassy Smiley, assistant manager at the Kingsport Aquatic Center. “High school and college students returning to area colleges make great candidates for these positions. They get to enjoy a job that’s rewarding instead of just something to do.”

If you’re thinking you’d like to be a part of a team of individuals that work together to save lives, register online at www.swimkingsport.com. There are prerequisites to taking the class as well as the course fee. The fee includes the full lifeguard course, a rescue mask and a valid 2-year certificate, if certification is obtained.

For more information, please visit www.swimkingsport.com or call 423-343-9758.

NEWS RELEASE
SUBJECT: Suspect in Custody in Multi-Jurisdictional Stolen Vehicle/Felony Hit and Run Incident that left K.P.D. Officer Injured
DATE: August 27, 2018
CASE #: 18-024613
GENERAL NARRATIVE
A suspect is now in custody in a multi-jurisdictional stolen vehicle/felony hit and run incident that left a Kingsport Police Officer injured.

On August 27, 2018 at approximately 10:30 AM, several Kingsport Police Patrol Officers were traveling toward, and almost to, a residence in the Lynn Garden area of Kingsport to check for a white 2011 Range Rover sport utility vehicle that had been reported stolen in Johnson City.

While en route, they spotted the stolen vehicle in question leaving the area, and a traffic stop was initiated. As one of the officers was exiting his police cruiser, the suspect, later identified as Shannon Michael Carter, put the vehicle in reverse, and deliberately accelerated toward the officer, striking him and pinning him between the two vehicles. He then fled the scene of the crash in the vehicle.

Some officers remained at the scene to render aid to the injured officer; however, additional officers were able to give chase. After a lengthy pursuit throughout the Lynn Garden and Clouds Ford areas, officers temporarily lost contact with him near the intersection of Clouds Ford Road at Duke Street.

Shortly thereafter, Kingsport Central Dispatch received information that the stolen Range Rover had been spotted near Volunteer High School in Hawkins County where it had crashed. Mr. Carter fled the scene of the crash; however, after an extensive search of the area he was ultimately apprehended.

He was transported to the Kingsport City Jail and initially charged with 1) Possession of Stolen Property over $10,000, 2) Felony Evading Arrest, 3) Reckless Driving, 4) Alteration of a License Plate, 5) No Driver License, and 6) Fugitive from Justice. He remains confined pending arraignment. He was also wanted on 16 preexisting active/outstanding felony warrants out of Braselton, GA (Jackson County) to include offenses similar to the ones he committed here today.

Additional felony charges are pending by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and will be announced in a follow-up news release to be issued by that agency. There are also possible additional charges pending related to the initial theft of the motor vehicle in Johnson City and his ultimate apprehension in Hawkins County.

The injured Kingsport Police Officer was transported to an area hospital for emergency medical treatment. He was initially awake and alert and listed in stable condition; however, he was eventually treated and released.

The Kingsport Police Department would like to thank all area first responders, especially the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office, who were involved with this incident in any capacity, whether rendering aid to our injured officer or helping apprehend the man who injured him. Your assistance was, and always is, appreciated.

As this remains an active and ongoing investigation, no further details will be released at this time. Inquiries regarding the initial motor vehicle theft in Johnson City or the final motor vehicle collision in Hawkins County will be referred to law enforcement agencies in those jurisdictions.

NEWS RELEASE
SUBJECT: K.P.D. to Conduct Sobriety Checkpoint as Part of Booze It & Lose It Campaign
DATE: August 27, 2018
GENERAL NARRATIVE
As an integral component of the Tennessee Highway Safety Office Booze It & Lose It Campaign, and in the ongoing effort to reduce the problem of Driving Under the Influence and resulting crashes, injuries, and deaths, the Kingsport Police Department will be conducting a Sobriety Checkpoint on Saturday, September 1, 2018. This Checkpoint will be held at an undisclosed time and location within the City of Kingsport.

As previously released:

The Kingsport Police Department has once again partnered with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) by participating in their annual Booze It & Lose It Campaign. The campaign encourages participating agencies to step up their education and enforcement efforts surrounding impaired driving.

This year’s campaign runs from August 17 until September 3, 2018, which encompasses the Labor Day holiday weekend, which is statistically one of the deadliest weekends of the year, with impaired drivers endangering themselves and others on America’s roadways.

Beyond the risk of serious injury or death associated with impaired driving, being convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs can impact your life in many ways, including loss of employment, prevention of employment in certain jobs, higher insurance rates, serious financial setbacks, personal and family embarrassment, and incarceration.

The Kingsport Police Department continues to stress that Tennessee D.U.I. laws apply not just to alcohol, but to any substance that impairs the ability to drive, including illegal drugs, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, as well as prescription drugs, even if they are prescribed by a physician.

The Kingsport Police Department is stressing the dangers of driving impaired to our community. Impaired driving is a massive problem in the United States, with more than 10,000 people dying annually. If you are out on the roads and you see someone driving impaired, please report it. You could help save a life.

The Kingsport Police Department recommends the following safe alternatives to drinking and driving:

  • Remember that it is never okay to drink and drive. Even if you have only had one alcoholic beverage, designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation to get home safely.
  • Download the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) SaferRide mobile app available on Google Play for Android devices and Apple’s iTunes Store for IOS devices. SaferRide allows users to call a taxi or a predetermined friend, and identifies the user’s location so he or she can be picked up.
  • Call a cab or a friend. Use community sober ride programs if available.
  • If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact the Kingsport Police Department.
  • Have a friend who is about to drink and drive? Take the keys away and make arrangements to get your friend home safely.

Remember…Booze It & Lose It. Lose your license, your freedom, your life!
