Police Blog

SUBJECT:  National Night Out 2024 Is October 17th

DATE:  October 10th, 2024

GENERAL NARRATIVE

Family event with activities, free movie & more

South Central/New Vision Youth, KHRA and the Kingsport Police Department are hosting a free community-building event that promotes community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.

On October 17, from 4 to 7pm, residents are encouraged to stop by V.O. Dobbins Sr., Complex (301 Louis Street) for an afternoon of fun and interaction with local emergency services.

“National Night Out in Kingsport enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement, bringing neighbors and police together under positive circumstances,” said New Vision Youth Director Johnnie Mae Swaggerty.

Inflatables and touch-a-truck will be happening, along with a free fun family movie being shown in the gym at 5pm. Pizza, snacks and drinks will be provided while supplies last.

The emergency services in attendance include the Kingsport Police Department, the Kingsport Fire Department, Kingsport Lifesaving Crew, Sullivan County Emergency Services and Sullivan County Sheriffs Office. These organizations will be set up with equipment for kids to check out and be ready to answer any questions.

National Night Out, a nationally celebrated occasion, encourages a helpful relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community.

“This community building event is a special way for our residents to meet and interact with officers and strengthen relationships,” said Chief Dale Phipps. “We all have the same goal of making Kingsport a safe and more caring place to live, work, and play.”

Bays Mountain Park and Planetarium reopened today

City News, City Press Releases

Bays Mountain Park and Planetarium reopened today (Wednesday, October 9) at normal hours. The park has been closed for more than a week as staff, volunteers and private contractors have worked to repair the damage done by Hurricane Helene.

Hurricane Helene caused numerous trees to fall on paths, trails and across the park in general. The storm caused damage to the Nature Center, the caretaker’s house and the fencing of one wolf habitat. Power, phone and Internet service was also down for much of the past 10 days.

Due to the professionalism and dedication of staff, no animals escaped or were harmed by the storm.

When the park reopens on Wednesday, the following trails will be open to the public – Azalea, Chestnut, Big Oak, Moonshiners, River Mountain Road, Fire Tower, Lakeside, Towhee, Food Plot, Sweet Gum, Hemlock, Chinquapin, Lake Road, Bays Ridge Road, Dolan Branch, Cliffside and Pine.

Our goal is to have the western end of the park open by Friday. There are small branches along River Mountain Road and Chinquapin. Please be careful when mountain biking along this area.

Work is continuing every day to remove trees, limbs and debris from the trails at Bays Mountain Park. Updates will be provided on the condition of the trails once more information is available. We appreciate the public’s patience during this challenging time.

For more information about Bays Mountain Park visit www.baysmountain.com.
