Kingsport hosting 3rd Shot Drop Tournament

The Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a 3rd Shot Drop pickleball tournament later this month.

This unique pickleball tournament focuses on the strategic third shot drop – a crucial skill in the game of pickleball. Players will compete in a fun, friendly environment, showcasing their precision and finesse.

Players will get a chance to enjoy some competitive play with the department’s intermediate and advanced divisions. The tournament will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on October 26 at the Riverview Park pickleball courts (300 Louis Street).

The cost is $10 per player, participants must be ages 16 and up and only one partner needs to register. The second player’s name can be added during checkout.

Kingsport Parks & Recreation hosting inclusive Halloween event

The Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department is hosting an inclusive trunk or treat event for the Halloween season.

“Be the Miracle” A.S.P.I.R.E. trunk or treat will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on November 2 at Brickyard Park (2017 Brickyard Park Drive). The event is free and open to people of all ages.

“The event is open to anyone with intellectual and/or physical disabilities, so please come out for an evening of trunk or treating, amazing costumes and kickball,” said Program Coordinator Renee Ensor.

This event is part of the department’s A.S.P.I.R.E. (Adaptive: Sports Programs Inclusive Recreation Experiences) program. Adaptive programs are for people with disabilities or physical limitations and are designed to ensure fair and equal competition among participants.

Annual Snow Fighting Equipment Inspection

City News

The Streets and Sanitation Division of the Kingsport Public Works Department will conduct its annual snow removal equipment inspections on October 18. The inspections will take place at the Kingsport Public Works facility at 609 West Industry Dr.

Members of the media may attend the inspection on October 18th from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Kingsport has more than 40 vehicles equipped with snowplows and salt spreaders. Another three trucks are equipped to place pre-treatment anti-icing brine on roads prior to a snow event.

Currently, Kingsport has 4,300 tons of salt on hand along with 6,000 gallons of calcium chloride and 10,000 gallons of salt brine. Contracts are in place to purchase additional salt if needed.

Milligan University returns for Challenger League Basketball program

Kingsport Parks and Recreation is partnering with the Milligan University Women’s Basketball team to offer a special program later this month.

The event is the A.S.P.I.R.E. Challenger League Basketball program, and it will be held on October 19 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event is free and open to all ages.

A.S.P.I.R.E. programs (Adaptive: Sports, Recreation, and Inclusive Recreation Experiences) are for people with disabilities or physical limitations and are designed to ensure fair and equal competition among participants.

Participants will learn and practice the basics of basketball, including shooting, dribbling and ball handling.

“Milligan University has done this program for several years and we greatly appreciate them coming over and working with our ASPIRE players,” said Program Administrator Renee Ensor. “The players always make sure the program is just a fun day of basketball.”

Though the event is free, you can register to let Kingsport Parks and Recreation officials know approximately how many people will be showing up. Participants can also show up the day of the event and join in.

GENERAL NARRATIVE

Update:

Aiden has been found safe and is no longer considered missing and endangered.

 

As previously released:

On October 10th, 2024, at approximately 11:30 am, Aiden Cradic was reported to the Kingsport Police Department as an endangered runaway juvenile by his father. Aiden is believed to have left in his 2013 white Chevrolet Silverado, Tennessee License (BRD 9158). It is unknown when Aiden left or what he was wearing. The last time his father spoke with Aiden was around 9:15 am on October 10th, 2024.

 

Aiden is 17 years old, stands approximately 6 feet tall, and weighs approximately 215 pounds. He has brown hair and blue eyes.

 

Anyone with information on Aiden’s current whereabouts is asked to contact Kingsport Central Dispatch at (423) 246-9111 or the Criminal Investigations Division at (423) 229-9429.

Cycling on the Glow returns to the Kingsport Greenbelt

The Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a Cycling on the Glow event later this month at the Kingsport Greenbelt.

This free event will take place at the Industry Drive Trailhead on October 19 at 6:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by Just Ride and Reedy Creek Bicycles.

Participants will need to bring their own helmet and bike, and riders are encouraged to decorate their bikes with “fun” lights. A helmet must be worn during the event and your bike must have a front light and rear reflector.

Though the event is free, Kingsport Parks and Recreation officials are asking folks to register to know approximately how many people will be showing up.

Register now for the All about Resin Class

Instructor Elena Corradino will teach a hands-on class about how to use the exciting and trending art medium of resin.

The All about Resin class will be held on October 19 in Room 228 of the Kingsport Renaissance Center (1200 E. Center Street). The class runs from 10 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. with a 30 minute break for lunch (bring your own or eat local).

Participants will learn techniques to create their own abstract resin coasters, crafting nine beautiful and functional pieces of art over the course of the class, perfect for gifting. Each participant will make different kinds of coasters, including alcohol ink coasters and resin mold coasters, and will leave being able to use resin safely on their own.

Corradino will go over safe mixing techniques and mistakes that can cost resin. The cost of the class is $98 per person and includes all materials. Participants will also be allowed to keep their respiratory mask and silicone mold.

GENERAL NARRATIVE

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Branch House Family Justice Center, along with their community partners, hosted an annual Service and Protection Awards event on October 10, 2024. This year’s recipient of the Mark Vance Award was Detective Kevin Ewing of the Kingsport Police Department. Detective Ewing has been employed with Kingsport Police Department for nearly 10 years. During his time with the department, Ewing has proven himself as a dedicated, compassionate detective and a champion for victims of domestic abuse. The Kingsport Police Department is proud to see him recognized for his thoroughness in his investigations and dedication to victims in these situations.

 

The Mark Vance Award was created in 2005 to recognize each year the officer who exemplifies high standards, professionalism, and a strong dedication to ending the cycle of domestic violence in Sullivan County.  Officer Vance was employed by the Bristol Tennessee Police Department at the time he was killed on November 27, 2004. Officer Vance was shot upon entering a residence in response to a domestic violence call for service.

To report a non-emergency, please use the new ConnectKingsport app.


 
ConnectKingsport is the app for everything Kingsport! From potholes and damaged street signs to other local issues that need attention, ConnectKingsport makes reporting an issue easier than ever. This app uses GPS to recognize your location and gives you a menu of common quality-of-life conditions to select from. The app also allows you to upload pictures or videos to accompany your request. Residents can track the status of reports they or other members of the community have submitted until the issue is resolved.

You can also use the app to find information about the City of Kingsport with links to the city website, animal services, ongoing events and more. Download the free app today to be a part of making Kingsport a great place to live, work and play!
