The Riverview Splash Pad (1101 Martin Luther Jr. Drive) will open for the summer season this Saturday (May 25) and will remain open until the end of September.
The splash pad will be active from 10:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. every day during the summer. The splash pad can be turned on during these hours by rubbing the silver activator pad located on the wall between the restrooms.
The splash pad is a zero-depth aquatic play structure that allows children to experience different types of water environments. Because the splash pad is a zero-depth facility, it does not have a lifeguard on duty, so all children must be supervised during their visit.
Features of the splash pad include surface water jets, a snake head water spray, run-through loops with water jets, rotating water cannons, water buckets and a palm tree with water jets.
Each of the picnic shelters adjacent to the splash pad can be reserved by clicking on the CivicRec link in the ConnectKingsport app or by going to www.kingsporttn.gov and clicking on the “CivicRec” link, then searching for “outdoor rentals” in the search bar. You can also reserve the shelters through the Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department by calling 423-224-2489 or 423-343-9723.
The rentals are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department is offering a four-week program next month aimed at educating children on the fundamentals and safety of bicycling.
The program – called TREADZ – will take place every Thursday in June from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Kingsport Farmers Market (308 Clinchfield Street). The June 13 session will be held at one of the Kingsport Greenbelt Trailhead locations.
Children ages 2 to 8 can register and the cost is $15 per participant. You will need to bring your own bicycle and helmet.

The City of Kingsport plans to begin water system improvements in the vicinity of the Main Street/Broad Street intersection on Monday, May 20. There are currently no water outages expected with this work.
Thomas Construction and Summers Taylor will be the contractors performing this work for the city. This water line work is part of the utility improvement phase for the Main Street Rebuild Project.
The contractor plans to be working on the Main Street water system within the Broad Street and Cherokee Street block for approximately one month.
The construction zones and detours (when and where applicable) will be marked by signs, and flaggers will be directing traffic when necessary. Drivers are asked to use caution in the area during this time.

The Friends of the Kingsport Public Library, in partnership with the City of Kingsport, recently launched a $1.5 million fundraising campaign to help fund a multi-million dollar renovation and upgrade of the Kingsport Public Library.
The “Library of the Future” fundraising campaign is now underway and aims to help fund the first major renovation of the library in more than 30 years.
The campaign has numerous sponsorship opportunities at various levels of contribution. Everyone from individuals to small businesses to large corporations has the opportunity to sponsor a space in Kingsport’s newly renovated and expanded library.
Various sponsorship opportunities include:
$15,000 and under – the media room, phone booth, break room, study room and supervisors office.
$15,000 to $100,000 – the welcome desk, tech center, board room, information services, graphic novels and the large conference room.
$100,000 and above – fiction collection, non-fiction collection, teen maker space, children’s area and the main auditorium.
The renovation project will include many key improvements, such as
- Doubling the size of the children’s area.
- Installing a new elevator to ensure better accessibility.
- Adding four study rooms to provide dedicated spaces for focused learning.
- Creating dedicated space for children’s programming.
- A dedicated and expanded teen maker space.
- Establishing dedicated space for local history and genealogy.

SUBJECT: KPD Responds To Report Of Shooting On West Stone Drive

GENERAL NARRATIVE
On May 16th, 2024, Kingsport Police Officers responded to the area of Burger King, 4225 W. Stone Drive, in reference to shots being fired into a vehicle. Officers arrived and learned that a white male had discharged a firearm at a white Chevrolet truck, that fled the scene prior to officers arriving. Officers quickly located and detained a male suspect identified as, Jeffrey Cherowahya. Officers located the victim, identified as Timothy Blalock, and the white Chevrolet truck on Big Elm Road.
Officers determined that Cherowahya had displayed a firearm at Blalock and fired one shot at his vehicle. As a result of the initial investigation, Cherowahya was arrested for aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.
No one was injured as a result of this incident. This is believed to be an isolated incident, and there is no threat to the public at large.
This is still an active and ongoing investigation.

GENERAL NARRATIVE
Update: The William L. Jenkins Forensic Center of the E.T.S.U. James H. Quillen College of Medicine determined that Ronald Wayne Davidson died from an accidental drowning in the South Fork of the Holston River on April 30th, 2024.
As previously released:
The body found in the South Fork of the Holston River has been identified as, Ronald Wayne Davidson, of Kingsport. Davidson was believed to have been fishing in or around the river, and his cause of death is still under investigation. His body was sent to the William L. Jenkins Forensic Center of the E.T.S.U. James H. Quillen College of Medicine in Johnson City for a forensic autopsy.

On April 30th, 2024, at approximately 6:45 pm, the Kingsport Police Department responded to a possible drowning on the South Fork of the Holston River at Riverbend Park. Kingsport Police Officers worked with Kingsport Fire and Kingsport Lifesaving crews to locate and recover the body from the river near the South John B. Dennis Highway bridge.
The body will be sent to the William L. Jenkins Forensic Center of the E.T.S.U. James H. Quillen College of Medicine in Johnson City for a forensic autopsy.
Currently, Kingsport Police Detectives do not suspect foul play.
This is an active and ongoing investigation, and more details will be released as they become available.
