Kingsport Archives celebrating its 30th anniversary this month
The Kingsport Archives – established in 1994 to preserve the history and heritage of the City of Kingsport – is celebrating its 30th anniversary this month with several special events, including an open house, social media campaign and guest lecture series.
The open house will take place October 3 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the archives (415 Broad Street, 5th floor) with a special presentation at 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
On October 24 at 5:30 p.m. retired history teacher Jim Welch will give a lecture titled “Turning Points” at the Kingsport Center for Higher Education (300 W. Market Street). This event is also free and open to the public.
During the month of October, the Kingsport Archives will do a “30 Days of 30 Facts” campaign on its Facebook page, where each day a notable fact from 1994 will be posted.
Finally, beginning in November and running through December, the Kingsport Archives will have Christmas related photographs on display in the Circle Gallery (located on the first floor of city hall).
“For 30 years, the Kingsport Archives has provided the community a chance to explore the history of the Model City,” said Archivist Brianne Wright. “What better time than American Archives Month to celebrate our 30th anniversary and remind folks of the amazing asset we have here in downtown Kingsport.”
The Kingsport Archives – located on the fifth floor of city hall – is comprised of more than 900 collections of documents, photographs, books, maps and videos of individuals, organizations, industry, business, and non-current city records pertaining to the history of Kingsport for preservation and research purposes.
Since its inception, more than 120 community members have been involved with the Kingsport Archives, either as board members, library leadership or archives staff.
