City of Kingsport recognizes long-time carousel operator
The City of Kingsport recognized John “Jay” Church on Tuesday for his years of service and dedication as the operator of the iconic Kingsport Carousel.
Church was recognized by the city during a private event Tuesday afternoon with friends and family in attendance. Mayor Pat Shull read a proclamation during the event, thanking Church for his loyal service and proclaiming May 21 as Carousel Jay Day in the City of Kingsport.
In addition, city officials placed a special plaque on the tree booth (sculpted by Albert Perry) where Church operates the carousel daily.
“Church knows many of the carousel patrons by name and he’s always eager to tell the story of the Kingsport Carousel,” said Heather Buckley, special events program leader. “Not only does Church provide a friendly, first impression of the carousel, he also provides one for the City of Kingsport itself.”
For more than nine years, Church has served as the operator of the Kingsport Carousel, holding the title of being the first official employee and longest-serving employee of this iconic city attraction.
Church has a vast appreciation for art, previously being involved with the Kingsport Arts Guild, and personally knowing most of the carvers and painters who worked on the Kingsport Carousel. If you happen to come by and visit the carousel, be sure to say hello to Jay and thank him for the fine job he does every day.
