Time to put your best basketball credentials to the test in the Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department’s upcoming Hot Shot and Skills competition.
The one-day event is returning this year on December 30 at the V.O. Dobbins, Sr. Complex (301 Louis Street). The competition begins at 2 p.m. for children ages 7-8 and 9-10 and at 3 p.m. for children ages 11-13 and 14-17.
This Hot Shot & Skills competition features timed shooting rounds, dribbling obstacles, precision passing, and more. Bring your top moves and compete against the best players in the city’s basketball leagues.
This free event is for any city resident ages 7-17.

Kingsport’s annual Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting event is this Saturday (December 6) in downtown Kingsport. The parade begins at 6 p.m. with the tree lighting taking place at approximately 7:45 p.m.
Beginning at 2:30 p.m., expect road closures on Clinchfield Street (from West Center Street to Market Street), on West Center Street (from Clinchfield Street to Sullivan Street), and on East Center Street (from Sullivan Street to Clinchfield Street) and other side streets within this area.
All road closures and detours will be in place by 5:30 p.m. and will remain closed during the duration of the events Saturday evening. Center Street will be reopened at the conclusion of the parade.
In addition to the parade route closures, the 300 and 400 block of Broad Street and New Street (from Shelby to Commerce) will be closed Saturday at 8 a.m. for afternoon activities in the area. These closures will be lifted at the conclusion of the events.

The Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department is hosting an inclusive Christmas Party on December 12 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the V.O. Dobbins, Sr. Complex (301 Louis Street).
The event is open to all with intellectual and physical disabilities. Come out and enjoy some hot chocolate, games, crafts and Christmas-themed activities. Attendees are encouraged to wear their favorite tacky holiday sweater.
The Christmas Party is part of the department’s A.S.P.I.R.E. (Adaptive: Sports Programs Inclusive Recreation Experiences) program. Adaptive programs are for people with disabilities or physical limitations and are designed to ensure fair and equal competition among participants.

The City of Kingsport will host a Community Open House next week in order for the public to learn more about and provide feedback on the city’s comprehensive plan.
The open house will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on December 9 in the Montgomery-Watterson Boardroom (3rd floor) of Kingsport City Hall (415 Broad Street). Members of the community are encouraged to attend any time during the two-hour session.
Kingsport’s Comprehensive Plan renews the city’s long-term vision and provides a policy framework to guide long-term investment and decision making by city officials. The plan will allow the city to respond to current challenges like population growth and infrastructure demands, while taking advantage of economic opportunities and preserving the city’s unique character and resources.
At this open house, the public will have an opportunity to learn about the planning process, review the progress of the comprehensive plan and provide input and feedback on the draft recommendations covering topics such as land use and community character, housing, infrastructure, economic development and quality of life.
The comprehensive plan was developed using community input gathered through both in-person and virtual workshops, as well as multiple pop-up events during Fun Fest. The open house will serve as the final public forum for community feedback on the comprehensive plan.
