The Kingsport Public Library’s summer movie series has returned this year, offering families a free Saturday afternoon matinee of high adventure, animated fun and a free bag of popcorn.
The free movies will be shown from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the first-floor auditorium of the library on May 18, June 15 and July 6, so be sure to mark your calendars.
The summer movie series kicks off May 18th with an archaeological adventure in the desert, when an American serving in the French Foreign Legion accidentally awakens a mummy, who then begins the search for his long-lost love. This 1999 film stars Brendan Frazier, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah and Arnold Vosloo.
On June 15, the library will be showing a 2023 animated movie about a young girl who makes a wish upon a star and gets more than she bargained for when a trouble-making star comes down from the sky to join her. The film stars the voice-talents of Ariana DeBose, Chris Pine, Alan Tudyk and Angelique Cabral.
Finally, on July 6 the library returns to the world of archaeology with the classic 1981 film about an adventuring professor in a race against Nazis to find the Ark of the Covenant. The film stars Harrison Ford, Karen Allen, Paul Freeman and John Rhys-Davies.

More than 500 of the plates have been preordered to date
The City of Kingsport is pleased to announce that more than 500 Bays Mountain Park license plates have been pre-ordered! Now, we need your help in reaching our goal of 1,000 pre-orders.
If you love Bays Mountain Park and want to show your support in an artistic and unique way, then we’re asking you to consider purchasing an official Bays Mountain license plate. Designed by Cassy Rose, the vivid license plate shows a red and orange sunrise coming over a blue forested Bays Mountain.
Once 1,000 license plates have been ordered, the State of Tennessee will authorize the production of the plates. When production is complete (4-6 months), the plates will be shipped to your county clerk’s office, and you will be notified the plate is ready for pickup.
The cost to pre-order a license plate is just $35, and you can do so by going to www.kingsporttn.gov and clicking on the “CivicRec” link, then search for “license plate.”

The Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a Family Fun Night event on May 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Kingsport Miracle Field (2021 Brickyard Park Drive). The theme of this year’s event is “Happy Fiesta!”
Families of all ages are welcome to attend and enjoy playing yard games and kickball on the field’s flat, rubberized surface. The facility’s all-accessible playground will be open, music will be playing, and food trucks will be on hand in case you’re hungry.
The event is free, and all equipment will be provided.

Kingsport’s Parks and Recreation Department is offering a series of specialty camps this summer for children and teenagers with each one focusing on a specific activity for an entire week.
If you child loves competing in video games, building with LEGO bricks or crashing the volleyball net, then our specialty camps just might be the program to sign up for this summer.
The five specialty camps being offered this summer include:
E-Gaming Camp: (June 3- 7 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the V.O. Dobbins Sr Complex) – Campers will have the opportunity to play and be instructed to play a variety of games. Gamers will unite to hone their skills, connect with other gamers and dive into the world of electronic sports. Campers will have to bring their own console. Ages 7-14.
Inclusive Camp: (June 10-14 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the V.O. Dobbins Sr Complex) – Throughout the week, campers will have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of inclusive and adaptive activities that cater to diverse interests and abilities, from arts and crafts to sports and music. Ages 14 and up.
Volleyball Camp: (June 24-28 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Lynn View Community Center) – Our volleyball camp is for young athletes to come together and learn the beginning and intermediate skills of volleyball. Throughout the week, campers will participate in a variety of drills, games and scrimmages that focus on developing essential volleyball skills. Ages 7-13.
LEGO Camp: (July 8-12 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Borden Park) – Our LEGO specialty camp is where creativity, imagination and building come to life in a world of colorful bricks and endless possibilities. Throughout themed workshops, experiments, and challenges, campers will learn the fine art of building while having a blast with LEGO bricks. Participants will receive a LEGO set. Ages 6-12.
Pickleball Camp: (July 8-12 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Riverview Park pickleball courts) – Our pickleball camp offers participants the opportunity to refine their skills and enhance their understanding of the fundamentals of the sport. Participants will receive instruction on the fundamentals and mechanics of basic pickleball, tailored to their skill and experience. Ages 8-14.

Update: Pauline Sykes has been located and is safe. She is no longer considered to be missing and endangered.
As previously released:
KPD is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a missing elderly woman. On May 3rd, 2024 around 1:30 PM the Kingsport Police Department responded to WalMart (3200 Ft. Henry Dr.) in reference to a missing elderly female. Pauline Sykes (age 86), came to WalMart with a family member. Around 12:30 PM, surveillance footage indicated Sykes left this location by vehicle without her family member driving toward the area of Atoka Ln. Sykes is believed to be driving a 2002 silver colored Buick Century sedan bearing Tennessee license plate 30261PD. The vehicle has a black passenger side mirror. A prior photograph of the vehicle from 2019 is attached to this release. The license plate in the photograph differs from the current plate.
Sykes has a medical condition that may impair her ability to return home safely without assistance. A Silver Alert has been issued on Sykes by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Sykes is a white female, 5’3″ inches tall, weighs 135 lbs, gray hair, brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a blue/white striped shirt, mint colored pants, and black shoes.
Anyone with information on Sykes whereabouts is asked to immediately contact Kingsport Central Dispatch at (423) 246-9111, the Criminal Investigation Division at (423) 229-9429, or TBI at 1-800-TBI-FIND.

SUBJECT: KPD investigates fatal crash
DATE: May 2nd, 2024

GENERAL NARRATIVE
On May 2nd, 2024 at approximately 10:45 AM, Kingsport Police Patrol Officers responded to a crash at the intersection of Fort Henry Dr. and Moreland Dr. Due to the serious nature of the crash, KPD Traffic Investigators were summoned to the scene. Their initial investigation revealed the following: A 2013 Toyota Tundra driven by William Wimbish (age 64) was traveling north on Ft. Henry Dr. making a left turn to Moreland Dr. A 2008 Kawasaki ZXJ motorcycle driven by Steven Sexton (age 34) was traveling south on Ft. Henry Dr. as the Tundra was making the turn. Further investigation revealed that the motorcycle ran the red light at the intersection striking the truck. Due to injuries sustained in the crash, Mr. Sexton was transported to an area hospital where he later died. This crash remains under active review by KPD Traffic Investigators.
