Tax season has officially kicked off and the IRS is estimating more than 168 million individual tax returns will be filed this year. For many people, tax season can be a stressful time of the year, even for the more financially savvy of us.
Thankfully, the Kingsport Senior Center is offering free tax filing help for anyone age 50 and older during this year’s tax season. The help sessions will take place in the computer lab from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursdays from February 2 through April 13.
To schedule an appointment, call the front office at 423-392-8400. Appointments are scheduled on a first come, first served basis until all the time slots are filled. An intake form can be picked up in the front office and needs to be filled out before your appointment.
Be sure to bring all necessary documents (including a driver’s license and social security card) the day of your appointment.
Tax season officially began January 23 and the deadline for most people to file a return is April 18.
For more information, please call 423-392-8400.
Kingsport Rec Soccer is now accepting registrations for its spring soccer season. Divisions are offered for ages 3 to 15. All practices and games are held at Eastman Park at Horse Creek.
There are two divisions offered by Kingsport Rec Soccer:
Rec Soccer – This division is open to players ages 3 to 15 who are primarily devoted to the enjoyment and love of the game without a strong emphasis on competition. Players meet twice a week—on a weekday evening and on Saturdays.
Assessments are set for the week of February 13, with the 8-week program starting the week of March 13. Registration fees range from $45 – $85 per player for one 8-week season. There is a $30 discount for each additional child in the same household.
Tribe Soccer – This division is open to players ages 8 to 15 who are interested in competitive soccer and committed to attending additional training and games, as well as developing skills on their own. Players meet 3 to 4 times a week.
The 11-week program begins with assessments the week of February 13 and pre-season training the week of February 20. Registration fees range from $225 – $235 (plus the cost of a jersey) per player. There is a $30 discount for each additional child in the same household.
The deadline to register for any division is February 19. The organization also needs volunteer coaches as well. To register visit www.tricitiesunited.org. For more information about becoming a volunteer coach contact Shane Davis at 423-408-8144.
The 100-Mile Swim Club is taking its swimming challenge global, so now is the perfect time to dive in on this aquatic adventure.
The Kingsport Aquatic Center is pleased to announce its latest destination for the 100-Mile Swim Club – Saint Mark’s Square in Venice, Italy. The challenge calls for club members to work together by “traveling” on a 4,689-mile journey across the Atlantic Ocean to Italy.
The challenge is scheduled to begin Feb. 1 and registrations are now being accepted.
Interested swimmers can join the club for $15 (KAC members) or $25 (YMCA and non-members). All participants will receive a 2023 100-Mile Swim Club t-shirt, and anyone can join at any time throughout the year.
To register visit the front desk at the Kingsport Aquatic Center, call 423-343-9758 or visit www.kingsporttn.gov, click the “CivicRec” link and then select the “Aquatic Center” tab.
“We swam to Hawaii, we swam from Maine to California, and now we’re taking the challenge across the Atlantic Ocean to Italy,” said Chassy Smiley, assistant aquatic manager at the KAC. “We’re excited about this journey, and we think our club members will be too.”
If this challenge sounds daunting, Smiley wants to remind folks of the 100 Mile Swim Club’s motto: Every mile counts, every yard matters!
Formed in 2016, the 100-Mile Swim Club aims to build and strengthen the swimming community through group challenges while learning fun facts about landmarks along the way. Club members will swim at their own pace, KAC staff keeps track of individuals’ miles and the club’s collective progress, while a map in the lobby displays the entire route.
