Whether you enjoy wading in the pool, watching competitive swimming or just want to assist your community, the Kingsport Aquatic Center could use your help.
The KAC needs volunteer timekeepers for two of its upcoming swim meets – sixteen for the Mid-South event on Feb. 2-4 and eight for the AAC event on Feb. 9-11. Each day has a morning session from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and on the final day there is also an evening session from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Aquatics Program Coordinator Madison Gump said virtually anyone can do the job. All you have to do is stand behind the diving block and be able to push the button on a stopwatch.
“We have a few timekeepers, at least five or six, but if we can get some more then we’ll be able to meet our needs,” Gump said. “Even if you can’t do every single day and can just do one session, it still helps us tremendously.”
The timekeepers are volunteers and as such would not be paid for their services. However, Gump said the KAC typically provides its volunteers with snacks in the morning and a dinner option during the evening session.
In addition, these events would be a good opportunity for students to earn volunteer hours for the Tennessee Promise scholarship.
Both the Mid-South and AAC events are co-ed, collegiate events that the KAC has hosted since 2017. The Mid-South event is expected to have approximately 250 competitors, while the AAC will have a little over 100 competitors.

| The Kingsport Police Department has scheduled the next Police Applicant Testing Session for Tuesday, March 7, 2023 in anticipation of hiring several officers to fill any existing and upcoming vacancies. While K.P.D. now accepts applications year-round, in order to participate in this upcoming session, applications must be received by absolutely no later than Sunday, February 19, 2023. Any applications received after that date will be held until the next testing session.
Individuals who are interested in a rewarding career with a professional law enforcement agency are strongly encouraged to apply. All applicants must be a United States citizen and either already be at least 21 years of age or be turning 21 by no later than September 7, 2023. All applications must be submitted online using the following link: https://www.GovernmentJobs.com/Careers/Kingsport Following the February 19th deadline, all applicants will receive a confirmation email, as well as a letter by traditional mail, containing further instructions regarding the upcoming Police Applicant Testing procedures, as well as the exact date, time, and location that they are to report for testing. PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE WILL NOT BE A WRITTEN EXAMINATION AS PART OF THIS TESTING PROCESS. All applicants will begin the testing process with a physical agility evaluation. The physical agility evaluation will be administered on Tuesday, March 7, 2023. This session will be conducted at Domtar Park, located at 1414 Riverport Road in Kingsport. The physical agility evaluation will consist of a timed one-mile run and a timed roughly one-quarter-mile obstacle course designed to measure fitness, strength, agility, endurance, and perseverance as related to the duties of a Police Officer. Individuals must have an application on file and sign a waiver of liability in order to be eligible to participate. The applications of those candidates who successfully pass the physical agility evaluation will be reviewed for eligibility and suitability to move forward to the interview panel phase which will be conducted during the following week of March 13-17, 2023. General criteria to be considered for selection for an interview will be outlined in the confirmation email and letter each applicant will receive. Those applicants with the highest combined scores on the physical agility evaluation and interview panel will then be interviewed by the Chief of Police to determine the final selections. Those ultimately selected will also be subject to a medical examination, psychological evaluation, and a thorough background investigation prior to actual hiring. The current starting salary for Police Officer Trainee has recently been increased to $18.73 per hour or $38,962 annually. Applicants who are already certified law enforcement officers may be eligible for additional salary adjustments to compensate for prior experience if certain criteria are met. Academy training and all essential equipment including uniforms, firearms, body armor, and duty gear are provided by the department. K.P.D. also issues take-home police cruisers to officers meeting specific response-time requirements. Bays Mountain Park is sad to announce the death of one of its wolves, Takoda.
After suffering from an ear injury and subsequent infection, Takoda was euthanized last week under the care of veterinarian staff at the University of Tennessee.
“Takoda was a strong female that led the pack at the park for many years,” said Megan Krager, park manager at Bays Mountain Park. “She will be greatly missed by not only the park staff, but the community and region.”
Born in April 2014 in Sandstone, Minnesota, Takoda had lived at Bays Mountain Park since she was a small pup. Takoda led the wolf pack for many years, was known for her rambunctious nature and was well respected by the other members of her pack.
“Takoda was a strong leader from the time she was a young wolf,” said Park Naturalist Rhonda Goins. “She enjoyed howling and was always willing to put on a show for visitors. She was a good but strict leader. The kind every pack needs.”
