SUBJECT: KPD Apprehends Murder Suspect After Pursuit

GENERAL NARRATIVE
On April 17th, 2024, at approximately 10:00 am, Kingsport Police Officers located a red 2007 Toyota Camry (North Carolina license plate TLX6824) on John B. Dennis Highway that was entered in NCIC as being driven by a murder suspect, Dennis Jerome Sales. Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the Camry. The vehicle accelerated and failed to yield to blue lights and sirens. Officers continued to pursue the Camry from N. John B. Dennis Highway to E. Stone Drive toward Bristol. The vehicle continued traveling on E. Stone Drive reaching speeds over 100 miles per hour.
Officers forced the vehicle off the road with their cruisers near Ollis Bowers Hill Road, ending the vehicle pursuit. The male driver, Dennis Jerome Sales, fled the vehicle and pretended to present a weapon to officers. Sales also attempted to strike officers. After a brief struggle, Sales was taken in custody. Officers located two bags of a white powder substance in the driver’s floorboard and door, along with a baggie that contained a white residue.
Sales was taken to the Kingsport City Jail. While at the jail, Sales stated that he had ingested drugs and appeared to be suffering from an overdose. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment under police guard.
Dennis Jerome Sales is wanted in Mocksville, NC for homicide with full extradition. In addition to being charged as a fugitive from Justice, Sales was charged with felony evading arrest, resisting arrest, speeding, driving on suspended license, financial responsibility, simple assault x 2, reckless endangerment, due care, maintaining a dwelling, and possession of schedule II drug for resale.
This is still an active and ongoing investigation.
