GENERAL NARRATIVE
On 12/29/2023 around 8:35 PM, the Kingsport Police Dept. responded to a report of an SUV attempting to strike a pedestrian and possible shots being fired on Harrison Ave. Upon arrival, officers made contact with a male victim who advised his girlfriend, identified as Mary Bombailey( 36 year old female), had shot at him with a handgun outside the residence. He suffered a minor injury from the gunshot. Bombailey had left the scene. Moments later, Kingsport Officers located her vehicle traveling on Harrison Ave. near Bell Ridge Rd. A traffic stop was attempted. Bombailey refused to stop. Given the circumstances of this incident, officers pursued Bombailey into Weber City, VA where her vehicle came to a stop in the roadway near Price Less Foods in Weber City. The vehicle began to roll across the median into the oncoming traffic lane and ultimately into the parking lot of Burgers R Us. A Kingsport Officer used a patrol vehicle to physically stop Bombailey’s vehicle. Officers went to secure Bombailey and found her to be slumped over. She was removed from the vehicle and found to have what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Lifesaving measures were attempted but unsuccessful. The Weber City Police Dept., Scott County Sheriff’s Office, and the Virginia State Police responded to the scene. A handgun was located in Bombailey’s vehicle. The Scott County Sheriff’s Office is leading the death investigation in Virginia. Ms. Bombailey’s body has been sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke, VA with autopsy results pending. At this time, no additional criminal charges are expected against any other party in the incident that initially occurred on Harrison Ave. in Kingsport.

On 12/29/2023 around 8:30 PM Kingsport Police Patrol Officers responded to an address on Harrison Ave. on the report of a vehicle that had possibly struck a pedestrian. Upon arrival, officers located a male subject that had been involved in an altercation. Investigation determined that the other female party was in a vehicle and had just left the scene. Further investigation revealed the female was armed and had shot at the male. He suffered a superficial wound. Officers located the suspect vehicle near Bell Ridge Rd. and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver refused to stop. Given the circumstances, officers pursued the vehicle into Weber City, Virginia at which point it came to a stop in front of Price Less Foods (Weber City). Officers secured the vehicle and located the female driver deceased inside. The Weber City Police Dept., Scott County Sheriff’s Office, and the Virginia State Police responded to the scene. This incident remains an open and active investigation by the Kingsport Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division and the Scott County Sheriff’s Office. No names are being released pending notification of next of kin. To protect the integrity of the investigation, which is still in its early stages, no further details will be released at this time.
