Registrations open soon for Spring Adult Softball Leagues

Kingsport Parks and Recreation will soon begin accepting registrations for its Spring Adult Softball Leagues.

Teams can have a maximum of 20 players on their roster. Divisions offered include Church-Industrial, Co-Ed and Men’s Open. Registration will take place from March 18 through April 5.

The entry fee is $400 per team with a $15 non-resident fee for all players who live outside the Kingsport city limits (max: $75). All games will be played at Brickyard Park and the season will begin the week of April 22.

Kingsport hosting first-ever Inclusive Glow Party

The Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department is hosting its first-ever Inclusive Glow Party at the V.O. Dobbins Sr. Complex.

The free event will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on February 24 and include a “glowing” evening of black lights, music and more.

The Glow Party is part of the department’s A.S.P.I.R.E. (Adaptive: Sports Programs Inclusive Recreation Experiences) program. Adaptive programs are for people with disabilities or physical limitations and are designed to ensure fair and equal competition among participants.

Though the event is free, Kingsport Parks and Recreation officials are asking folks to register to know approximately how many people will be showing up.

Bays Mountain Park hosting Winter Planetarium Yoga

Bays Mountain Park is partnering with a local yoga instructor to offer residents an immersive yoga program inside the park’s planetarium theater.

The 60 minute event will take place from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on February 22 inside the planetarium theater at Bays Mountain Park. The cost is $12 per person and class size is limited to 10 people. Participants of all levels are welcome to attend. Wear exercise clothing and bring your own mat and water with a sealable lid.

The planetarium will simulate a day’s journey – from dawn to dusk – while participants do Sun Salutations, Warrior series, and balance poses. Concentric, eccentric and isometric contractions will be featured so participants can work to optimize both their strength and balance.

Finally, the class concludes with a twilight to starry night sky for the restorative portion of the yoga class.

MLK Day Parade – Road Closures

[UPDATE: The parade has been canceled and will be rescheduled for a later date.]

The 24th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Parade will take place at 12 p.m. on January 15.

The parade will start at the corner of E. Center Street and E. Sullivan Street and proceed westward down E. Sullivan Street to Kingsport City Hall. Refer to the attached map for available parking for the event.

  1. Sullivan Street – from E. Center Street to City Hall – will be closed from 11:30 p.m. until the conclusion of the event. All streets feeding into E. Sullivan Street along this route will also be closed during this time.

MLK Day closures and changes in Kingsport

City offices will be closed on Monday, January 15 in recognition of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Kingsport will not be adjusting garbage or trash/yard waste routes that day. Both the garbage routes and the trash/yard waste routes will run on a normal schedule.

However, there will be changes to the city’s demolition landfill schedule. The landfill will be closed to the public on Monday, January 15 and reopen on Tuesday, January 16.

Bulk leaf collection ends next week

The City of Kingsport will end its annual bulk leaf collection service next week. January 12 will be the last day crews will be out collecting leaves.

As a reminder, residents can always bag leaves and place them with the yard waste, and they will be picked up on the regularly scheduled trash/yard waste collection day.

Kingsport has provided an annual leaf collection service for decades, where the city is divided into six zones during this time with each zone serviced at least nine times from October until the middle of January.

Normally, between 1,800 and 2,000 tons of leaves are collected each year. The leaves are taken to the city’s demolition landfill where they are composted and used for city projects.

Temporary Lane Closure along Industry Drive

A section of Industry Drive will be closed next week for a contractor to perform sanitary sewer rehab work for the City of Kingsport.

The section of Industry Drive to be closed will be the northbound lane from just past Wheatly Street to Brickyard Park Drive. The closure will begin January 8 and continue through January 13.

Morgan Contracting, Inc. will be the contractor performing this work. The work is part of Kingsport’s Phase 1 Sanitary Sewer Lining Project of 2022. The construction zones will be marked by signs and directed by automated flagger devices (when required). Motorists are asked to use caution in this area during this time.

Section of John B Dennis Highway to be closed

The Tennessee Department of Transportation has announced a section of the John B. Dennis Highway (State Route 93) will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday (January 5) to 4 a.m. Monday (January 8 ).

The section of the John B. Dennis Highway to be closed runs from Moreland Drive to Lincoln Street and the closure is necessary to allow the state contractor to perform repairs at the bridge over the South Fork of the Holston River.

Signage will be in place to direct motorists around the work zone via State Route 126 (Wilcox Drive/Fort Henry Drive/Memorial Boulevard). Motorists are advised to expect delays and use caution while traveling in this area as workers will be present on the highway.

This work schedule is contingent on favorable weather conditions. As always, drivers are reminded to use all motorist information tools wisely and “Know Before You Go!” by checking travel conditions before leaving for your destination.

Kingsport hosting kids’ Fortnite Tournament

Kingsport’s Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a fun-filled evening of fort building – both physically and electronically – at the V.O. Dobbins Sr. Complex.

The event will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on January 19 and children of all ages can attend. Admission is any canned goods. There will be two types of fort building during the event.

  • Fortnight Tournament: Children ages 12 & under will compete in a Fortnite tournament on the XBOX Series X and Playstation 5 systems. Feel free to bring your Nintendo Switch as well.
  • Build-a-Fort Night: Have fun building your own fort using cardboard boxes.

Kingsport offering Basketball Skills & Drills Course

The Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department is offering a Basketball Skills and Drills course this coming January for children interested in learning the basics of basketball.

Classes will be held every Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. from January 10 through January 31 at the V.O. Dobbins, Sr. Complex (301 Louis Street).

During this four-week course, children will learn dribbling, shooting, and passing skills, as well as going over drills to improve speed, footwork, and agility.

The registration fee is $30 per person for city residents and $35 per person for non-city residents. The course is open to children ages 5 to 12.
