Kingsport Cultural Arts is partnering with the Cattywampus Puppet Council of Knoxville to bring a new and exciting workshop for the creative folks of the Model City.

Giant Puppet Making and Parade Art 101 is a workshop designed for teachers, crafters, performers and anyone else interested in learning how to design and create their own giant puppets and parade art for the Kingsport Arts Festival in April.

The workshop will be held on January 27 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Room 239 of the Kingsport Renaissance Center (1200 E. Center Street). The cost is $20 per person.

During this workshop, participants will focus on papier-mâché, cardboard sculpting, rigging, and other methods for making inexpensive parade art. There will not be enough time for participants to complete their own project during this workshop, but each participant will receive a Giant Puppet Making & Parade Art Manual to take home to complete their own design.

Participants are recommended to wear comfy clothes during the workshop and something to write notes on. Feel free to bring water and snacks too.

The Cattywampus Puppet Council is a community-based, nonprofit arts organization located in Knoxville. Over the past eight years, the council has brought interactive parades, theater, play, and giant puppets to communities across East Tennessee and the South, utilizing the arts as a vehicle for helping communities tell their stories, build relationships and cultivate power, joy, creativity, and justice together.

Instructor Elena Corradino will teach a hands-on class about how to use the exciting and trending art medium of resin.

The All about Resin class will be held on January 20 in Room 228 of the Kingsport Renaissance Center (1200 E. Center Street). The class runs from 10 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. with a 30 minute break for lunch (bring your own or eat local).

Participants will learn techniques to create their own abstract resin coasters, crafting nine beautiful and functional pieces of art over the course of the class, perfect for gifting. Each participant will make different kinds of coasters, including alcohol ink coasters and resin mold coasters, and will leave being able to use resin safely on their own.

Corradino will go over safe mixing techniques and mistakes that can cost resin. The cost of the class is $98 per person and includes all materials. Participants will also be allowed to keep their respiratory mask and silicone mold.

Bays Mountain Park is partnering with a local yoga instructor to offer residents a special Winter Yoga Hike.

The hike will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:15 on January 15 at Bays Mountain Park. Enjoy the winter season by participating in a 2-mile, out and back hike along a portion of the Lake Road and Azalea Trails that will take approximately 70 minutes to complete (yoga included).

The amphitheater and other stops along the way are utilized to teach standing yoga poses that will challenge and develop your strength, flexibility and balance. Isometric core work will be emphasized while hiking.

The cost is $6 per person and class size is limited to 15 people. All levels are welcome. Wear exercise clothing and plan to meet outside the Nature Center.

Bays Mountain Park is pleased to bring back a popular planetarium show for the new year.

“Totality” is now showing as the main planetarium program through April 7. The show will take place Tuesday through Friday at 4 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m.

The 35-minute show is followed by a live tour of the night sky using the planetarium’s optical star projector.

“Totality” is a fascinating look at the wonders of eclipses, especially total solar eclipses. An eclipse is described simply as when one celestial object blocks another from our view.

Produced by Bays Mountain Planetarium staff, the program examines what eclipses are, how and when they occur, and what wonderful sights they create. The program also looks back to a fascinating period in scientific discovery when general relativity was proven with the photographic recording of a total solar eclipse.

The production includes a variety of styles, from spectacular space environments to humorous pop-up books. One part of the show illustrates what happens when you are caught in the shadow of the Moon and the Sun is plunged into a total solar eclipse.

“Totality is a unique program in that it recreates what it would look, feel and sound like if you were in nature and a total eclipse occurred,” said Planetarium Director Adam Thanz. “It’s a real treat for the whole family.”

The alternate planetarium feature showing Saturdays and Sunday at 2 p.m. through April 7 will be “Appalachian Skies.”

“Appalachian Skies” takes visitors on a majestic tour of the current evening sky using the Zeiss optical star projector instrument. This live presentation is enhanced with additional content from our VELVET LED projectors for a wonderful, immersive experience.

Due to the live nature of the program, and the natural progression of the changing night sky throughout the seasons, each presentation will be unique. Learn what fascinating mythological constellations, from Ancient Greece and other cultures, will be easily visible. Find out what planets are easily seen as well. Visitors will take this knowledge home and be able to locate these celestial sights for themselves.
