A gray 2013 Chrysler 200 4-door sedan, driven and solely occupied by Cecilia M. Haynes (19 year old white/female adult of Greeneville, TN), was traveling lawfully on I-26 in the centermost of three eastbound lanes when it was overtaken by a red 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier 4-door sedan traveling behind her in the same lane and direction, but at a significantly higher rate of speed.

The Chevrolet, driven and solely occupied by Jeremiah S. Fields (37 year old white/male adult of Kingsport, TN), rear-ended the Chrysler as Mr. Fields swerved the vehicle to the left in an attempt to avoid a collision with and/or pass the Chrysler. After hitting the Chrysler, the Chevrolet veered out of control into the cable barrier and overturned, coming to rest upside down in the adjacent median.

As the Chevrolet rolled, Mr. Fields, who was not properly restrained by a seatbelt as required by law, was ejected from the vehicle. Mr. Fields was transported by Sullivan County EMS to an area hospital for emergency medical treatment of serious, but non-life threatening, injuries. Ms. Haynes was not injured in the collision.

Due to heavy traffic congestion following the crash, a traffic advisory was issued at the time to allow first responders to safely carry out their duties. The scene has since been cleared, and normal traffic patterns have resumed.

This crash remains under open and active investigation by the K.P.D. Traffic Unit with charges pending. As such, no additional details are available for release at this time.

On November 9, 2019 at approximately 7:45 PM, Kingsport Police Patrol Officers responded to a motor vehicle rollover crash, involving the possible ejection of at least one occupant, on eastbound Interstate 26 between mile-markers 1 and 2 in Kingsport. Due to the seriousness of the crash, the K.P.D. Traffic Unit has been called to the scene to investigate.

The area is currently extremely congested. Area motorists are strongly encouraged to completely avoid the area and seek an alternate route if at all possible. Anyone already in the immediate area is asked to pay attention, use caution, be patient, and obey all traffic instructions as first responders on scene carry out their duties.

No additional information regarding the crash itself is available at this time. Further details will be shared as they become available at an appropriate point in the investigation.
