SUBJECT:  Kingsport Police Department Reminds Citizens that Fireworks Are Illegal Inside City Limits

GENERAL NARRATIVE

As we approach the Fourth of July celebrations, the Kingsport Police Department would like to remind all residents that the use of fireworks within the city limits is strictly prohibited, EVEN DURING THE HOLIDAY. 

In order to ensure public safety and reduce the risk of fires, injuries, and disturbances, KPD will strictly enforce Municipal Ordinance 42-112 which states as follows:

(a)           For the protection of the health, safety and welfare of the citizens and residents of the city, it is unlawful for any person to manufacture, use, discharge, possess with the intent to discharge, or offer for sale, expose for sale, sell at retail or keep with intent to sell at retail, fireworks in the city.  

 The above ordinance carries a fine of $148.75 if convicted of a violation.  This ordinance includes all types of fireworks, regardless of size or perceived safety.  The use of fireworks with intent to cause a public disturbance could potentially constitute a state law violation of Disorderly Conduct which carries the possibility of physical arrest. 

KPD asks citizens NOT TO CALL 911 when reporting fireworks disturbances unless the fireworks have created an actual emergency such as a fire or serious injury.  These disturbances should be reported by calling the NON-EMERGENCY NUMBER for Kingsport Central Dispatch which is (423) 246-9111.  KPD units will be actively patrolling and will respond to these calls as quickly as possible. 

An exception to the above regulations is properly licensed professional fireworks displays that are conducted under controlled conditions by trained professionals.  The Kingsport Police Department reminds the public that the annual Red, White, and Boom Independence Day Celebration will be on Saturday, July 5^th.  A professional fireworks show will take place in Downtown Kingsport that evening following the concert around 9:45 PM.  KPD asks the public to consider attending this event for your legal fireworks viewing pleasure.     For further information on this celebration please visit https://visitkingsport.com/redwhiteboom/
