SUBJECT: | K.P.D. Investigating Motor Vehicle Collision Involving Pedestrian Behind Dobyns-Bennett High School (Update) | |||

GENERAL NARRATIVE | ||||
Update: On August 16, 2021 just after 3:00 PM, Kingsport Central Dispatch was notified of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian on East Center Street, behind Dobyns-Bennett High School, in Kingsport. Due to the nature of the incident, the K.P.D. Traffic Unit responded to the scene. Their resultant investigation revealed the following:
A silver 2019 Honda SUV sport utility vehicle, driven and solely occupied by a 17 year old female juvenile, was westbound in the 1600 block of East Center Street, behind Dobyns-Bennett High School, in Kingsport. Meanwhile, a 15 year old male juvenile pedestrian was on the school side of the roadway and attempting to cross East Center Street. According to the driver and several witnesses, the pedestrian darted between two school buses and into the path of the vehicle which subsequently struck him. The pedestrian sustained suspected major injuries and was transported to an area hospital for emergency medical treatment. As of the time of issuance of this news release, he remains hospitalized in serious condition. The driver of the vehicle was not injured. Both individuals are students at Dobyns-Bennett High School. A marked crosswalk, to provide for safe and legal crossing, was available for use within close proximity to where this collision occurred; however, it was not used in this instance. This investigation remains active and ongoing by the K.P.D. Traffic Unit. As such, no further details are available for release at this time. As previously released: On August 16, 2021 just after 3:00 PM, Kingsport Central Dispatch was notified of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian on East Center Street behind Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport. The initial findings indicate that the crash involved a juvenile female driver and a juvenile male pedestrian. Both individuals are students at Dobyns-Bennett High School. The pedestrian sustained serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital for emergency medical treatment. As of the time of issuance of this news release, his condition is unknown. Parents of both students have already been notified. As the investigation is still in its infancy, no further details are currently available for release. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available, but only at an appropriate point in the investigation. |
