The Tennessee Society Daughters of the American Revolution (TSDAR) has been awarded a Tennessee America 250 Grant from the Tennessee Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial. The grant supports educational initiatives commemorating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States and encourages Tennesseans to engage with the nation’s rich history.
Through this grant, TSDAR purchased and distributed educational resource sets to the primary public library in each of Tennessee’s 95 counties. Each set includes the acclaimed documentary series The American Revolution by renowned filmmaker Ken Burns, along with its companion volume, The American Revolution: An Intimate History.
The Long Island Chapter of the Tennessee Society Daughters of the American Revolution was honored to present this educational resource set to the Kingsport Public Library. The donation will provide library patrons with greater access to historical materials that explore the people, events and ideas that shaped America’s fight for independence.
“We are grateful to the Tennessee Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the Long Island Chapter for providing these educational resources,” said Stephanie Griffin, manager of Kingsport Public Library. “As our nation approaches its 250th anniversary, these materials will offer our community an opportunity to explore the people, events and stories of the American Revolution through both documentary film and historical scholarship.”
The Tennessee America 250 Grant program supports projects that promote awareness and understanding of Tennessee’s role in the American Revolution and the nation’s founding. By placing these resources in libraries across the state, TSDAR hopes to inspire lifelong learning and encourage meaningful reflection on America’s history and heritage.

Kingsport Cultural Arts is pleased to announce the latest exhibiting artist at The Circle Gallery – Vicky Darnell.
Darnell, a self-taught painter, took up the brush later in life and uses her artistic talents to create images of cities, the outdoors and colorful flowers.
The Circle Gallery is located on the first floor of Kingsport City Hall (415 Broad Street) and Darnell’s exhibit will be on display through September 16. The Circle Gallery is brought to you by Kingsport Cultural Arts.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Darnell began painting after retirement – less than three years ago – and so far she’s been thrilled how this new-found talent has opened up a whole new world for her.
“One day in my early 60’s I decided to unleash the artist inside of me,” Darnell said. “I was at a friend’s home, and she paints, and I said, ‘I wish I could do that.’ She replied, with three words, “Have you tried?”
As such, Darnell took several online painting tutorials, watched some YouTube videos, purchased a few art supplies and started painting. She made a commitment to herself to do something to improve every day, and the work paid off. Darnell’s work has been accepted into three galleries and her series of paintings about Hurricane Helene has been showcased on the local news.

“I found painting to be peaceful and fun. I kept my art secret for a while with no confidence to share it with others, but one day, I did,” Darnell said. “I found most people cheered me on and some even asked about purchasing my paintings.”

The City of Kingsport is pleased to announce the Clinchfield Street Bridge will be undergoing significant repairs beginning next month.
The six-month project will begin July 6 and consists of removing a portion of the existing concrete deck and replacing it with new concrete. In addition, the contractor will widen the sidewalk on the west side of the bridge.
Cost of the project is $1.275 million, and work will take 180 calendar days to complete. Southern Constructors, Inc., is the contractor for the city on this project
During the course of the project, southbound traffic coming from Stone Drive will be able to flow continuously. However, northbound traffic (heading to Stone Drive) will be detoured down Holston Valley Drive to Ravine Road to Gibson Mill Road.
