GENERAL NARRATIVE |
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
This year, National Police Week will take place from May 13 through 19, 2019. Traditionally, the local Fraternal Order of Police (F.O.P.) Burgess-Mills Lodge #11 conducts a Law Enforcement Memorial Service at the Kingsport Justice Center during National Police Week. The service this year will be held this coming Monday, May 13, 2019 at 4:00 PM at the Kingsport Police Department Law Enforcement Memorial and Eternal Flame, located on the corner of West Market and Clay Streets in Downtown Kingsport. As always, the department extends an open invitation to anyone who would like to join us as we remember and honor our local fallen officers, as well as all fallen officers throughout the nation. Bobby L. Russell, Sullivan County Circuit Court Clerk, will serve as the keynote speaker. Mr. Russell recently retired from an extensive 32-year law enforcement career with the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office and is a longtime member, unwavering supporter, and multi-term past president of the local chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police. The local Fraternal Order of Police (F.O.P.) Burgess-Mills Lodge #11 is named in honor of two of the Kingsport Police Department’s Fallen Officers, Patrolman Ira H. Burgess and Patrolman John E. Mills, who were tragically shot and killed in the line of duty in 1950 and 1940 respectively. Information regarding these and all of K.P.D.’s Fallen Officers can be found in the following link: https://www.KingsportTN.gov/Police-Department/Our-Fallen-Officers/ The following inscription is found on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C. “This Memorial is dedicated to all Law Enforcement Officers in the United States of America. Inscribed on these walls are the names of those men and women who died in the line of duty. It is not how these officers died that made them heroes. It is how they lived.” Links to the National Police Week website, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund website, and the Officer Down Memorial Page are provided below: |

We see the Sun and the stars every day, but how much do you actually know about them? On May 11, visit Bays Mountain Park & Planetarium at its celebration of Astronomy Day to learn about the celestial objects our planet calls neighbors.
The Bays Mountain Astronomy Club hosts a yearly celebration of the International Day of Astronomy each year at the park. This free, fun-filled day is a great Saturday activity for the whole family where you’ll learn all about the science and hobby of astronomy.
The club will provide fascinating displays and hands-on activities that educate about astronomy, telescopes, careers and education in astronomy, the Sun and so much more. Over the course of the day, the club will also host Solar and Nighttime Viewings where you’ll have the chance to see the Sun, the stars, the Moon and more up close through powerful telescopes.

Summertime is pool time, and the Kingsport Aquatic Center is here to make sure you or your children are ready to dive in and swim. Summer swim lessons begin this June.
There are four sessions of summer lessons in June and July. All group swim lessons at the Kingsport Aquatic Center are American Red Cross certified. Swim lessons are offered in group, private, and semi-private settings to best suit your child’s needs or your schedule. Summer sessions are eight classes long, Monday through Thursday for two weeks. If you’re unsure of your child’s swim skills, a swim test can help the KAC determine the correct class level for them.
If you are an Aquatic Center or YMCA member, lessons are $50 for your first child and $45 per additional child in your household. If you’re a nonmember lessons are $60 for your first child and $55 per additional child. Scholarships are available for qualifying applicants.
Registration begins in person and online at 8 a.m. on the dates listed below, and will close at 5 p.m. on the final day. To make online registration easier, please create an account before the day of registration. If an account is created after 5 p.m. on Friday and before 8 a.m. on Monday, you will not receive a password until Monday at 8 a.m. Google Chrome and Firefox are compatible web browsers. YMCA members who plan to register online need to show their YMCA card to the KAC front desk staff before registration in order to update the system to reflect your YMCA membership.
