KINGSPORT – This Fall, when school begins, in memory of Buster Watts, The Hero in You Foundation will provide three scholarships, each of $250, to the elementary classrooms who write the best description of a person who is a hero to them.‚ ‚ A selection of work will be exhibited in The Gallery at City Hall and/or the Atrium Gallery at the Renaissance Arts Center.‚ The 3 winning essays will be selected by the Kingsport Fire Department.
Buster recently worked with Bunni & Rick Benaron who created The Hero in You Foundation which is dedicated to honoring the heroes in our lives and inspiring kids to want to be a hero in their own life.‚ Kingsport is part of the ‚¬Dalmatian Nation and friendly red and black Dalmatian sculpture, designed by Karen and Tony Barone, can be found at Fire Station #1 on Island Street in Downtown Kingsport.
Buster Watts was a beloved member of the Kingsport community, a longtime art supporter and an avid community volunteer. Buster died on May 26 after a lifetime of service to his community.‚ He will be sorely missed.‚ ‚ Teachers wishing to have their students participate are encouraged to get details of the program from the Kingsport Office of Cultural Arts and Kingsport Fire Department.

KINGSPORT‚-City of Kingsport Traffic Division personnel are conducting a study to consider removing the traffic signals at the intersections of Watauga Street/Crescent Drive and Watauga/Lamont Street. If removed, the signals would be replaced by stop signs on each approach, creating a four-way stop intersections.
Current traffic volumes at these intersections do not support continuing signalization on a technical basis, although community input is welcomed.
Anyone with questions or concerns about removing the signals is asked to submit comments to the Traffic Division at 423-229-9487.
KINGSPORT – On June 1, 2015, the Kingsport Area Transit Service (KATS) will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act by offering half price Dial-A-Ride ticket books for $12.00 (24 tickets per book).
The 25th anniversary of is a time to reflect on a law that has made a hugely positive impact on the lives of people with disabilities in our country, said Candace Sherer, Civil Rights Program Administrator for KATS. Upon passage in 1995, Congress clearly stated its intent to ensure equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency for individuals with disabilities.
KATS Dial-A-Ride ADA/65 is a curb-to-curb transportation service available to Kingsport residents who qualify.
We want to thank our current Dial-A-Ride customers through this promotion, as well as attract new riders who can benefit greatly from Dial-A-Ride service, Sherer said. This is definitely a situation where spending a little money up front will save a lot of money over time as these‚ tickets do not expire.
Tickets may be purchased at KATS downtown terminal, 109 Clay Street, or, if you are already an active customer, you may purchase tickets directly from your driver. Cash and checks are the only form of payment accepted. Drivers DO NOT carry cash and cannot make change.
