HEATSTROKE: 30 children died last year in the US from heatstroke in a hot car, zero so far this year. Lets keep it that way.
Safe Kids Worldwide, the National Safety Council, the National Child Passenger Safety Board, and the Kingsport Fire Department asks you to share these tips with everyone you know.
Babies and young kids can sometimes sleep so peacefully that we forget they are even there. It can also be tempting to leave a baby alone in a car while we quickly run into the store. The problem is that leaving a child alone in a car can lead to serious injury or death from heatstroke. Young children are particularly at risk, as their bodies heat up three to five times faster than an adults. These tragedies are completely preventable. Heres how we can all work together to keep kids safe from heatstroke.
Hard Facts
Heatstroke is the leading cause of non-crash, vehicle-related deaths for children. On average, every 8 days a child dies from heatstroke in a vehicle.
Top Tips
Reduce the number of deaths from heatstroke by remembering to‚ ACT.
A: Avoid heatstroke-related injury and death by never leaving your child alone in a car, not even for a minute. And make sure to keep your car locked when youre not in it so kids dont get in on their own.
C: Create reminders by putting something in the back of your car next to your child such as a briefcase, a purse or a cell phone that is needed at your final destination. This is especially important if youre not following your normal routine.
T: Take action. If you see a child alone in a car, call 911. Emergency personnel want you to call. They are trained to respond to these situations. One call could save a life.

KINGSPORT – On April 10, 2015, Aleksandr Andreyevich Lukashov died as a result of injuries sustained in a single vehicle tractor-trailer crash that occurred the previous month. Mr. Lukashov had been hospitalized in critical condition at Holston Valley Medical Center since the night of the crash. The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation by the K.P.D. Traffic Unit.
As previously released:
On Friday, March 13, 2015, at approximately 11:15 PM, Kingsport Central Dispatch was notified of a single vehicle tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 81 at mile marker 59 in Kingsport. Officers from the Kingsport Police Patrol Division immediately responded to the scene. Due to the severity of the crash and resultant injuries, the K.P.D. Traffic Unit was summoned and assumed the lead investigatory role. Their subsequent crash reconstruction analysis revealed the following:
A red 2008 Volvo semi/tractor-trailer, hauling approximately 30,000 pounds of frozen chicken, was northbound on Interstate 81 crossing a bridge at mile marker 59, just before the Colonial Heights exit. The truck was owned by EMK Express of Joliet, Illinois. For unknown reasons, the truck suddenly swerved sharply to the right and struck a concrete barricade. The truck overrode the railing that topped the barricade and plunged roughly 50 feet to the railroad tracks below.
The driver, 67 year old Aleksandr Andreyevich Lukashov of Beaverton, Oregon, was seriously injured in the crash. He was transported to Holston Valley Hospital by Sullivan County E.M.S. for emergency treatment and is currently listed in critical condition. The truck itself was completely destroyed.
The circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation by the K.P.D. Traffic Unit. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash who has not yet spoken to investigators is asked to contact the K.P.D. Traffic Unit at 423-224-2750.
