NEWS RELEASE
SUBJECT: K.P.D. Traffic Unit Investigating Four Vehicle Crash Which Resulted in Three Injuries
DATE: April 24, 2015
CASE #: 15-008290
GENERAL NARRATIVE
On April 24, 2015 at approximately 11:30 AM, the Kingsport Police Department’s Traffic Unit responded to a four vehicle crash in the intersection of Fort Henry Drive at Memorial Boulevard in Kingsport. Three vehicles including a 2004 Chevrolet Impala Police Cruiser owned by the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, a 2014 Toyota 4Runner, and a 2012 Toyota RAV4 were stopped on southbound Fort Henry Drive waiting for the red light to change. The vehicles were stopped three abreast in the left turn lane, left lane, and right lane respectively.

A 2005 BMW 330i driven by Mary A. Adair was westbound on Memorial Boulevard at a high rate of speed in the right turn lane, approaching Fort Henry Drive. For unknown reasons, Ms. Adair made no attempt to slow her vehicle as she approached the intersection. Her BMW struck a concrete lane divider sending the vehicle airborne. The BMW crossed the northbound lanes in the air and crashed into the three stopped vehicles.

Ms. Adair received incapacitating injuries and was transported to Holston Valley Medical Center by Sullivan County E.M.S. Two other drivers sustained non-incapacitating injuries and were transported for treatment as well. All 4 vehicles sustained disabling damage and had to be towed from the scene. The southbound lanes of Fort Henry Drive remained closed for approximately two hours while the crash was investigated and the vehicles were removed from the scene.

This crash remains under investigation by the K.P.D. Traffic Unit with charges pending. Anyone who witnessed the crash who has not yet spoken with investigators is asked to contact the K.P.D. Traffic Unit at 423-224-2750. Investigators are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who observed Ms. Adair’s driving while her vehicle was traveling on Memorial Boulevard prior to the crash.
