SUBJECT: Con Artists Bilk Kingsport Restaurant in Incorrect Change Scam
DATE: July 8, 2014
On June 9, 2014 at approximately 2:30 PM, two white male con artists swindled a Kingsport Restaurant using an incorrect change scam. The suspects targeted Subway, located at 1233 North Eastman Road in Kingsport. One of the suspects purchased two cookies for $1.10, paying with a 50 dollar bill and $.10 in change. The cashier gave him the correct $49 in change. The suspect turned away and pocketed $40 of the change. He then returned to the cashier claiming he was only given $9 in change. Being caught off guard, the cashier gave him the $40 he claimed he was shorted. While all of this was transpiring, the other suspect had asked for an application for employment, thus distracting the remaining employees.

A photo of the suspects taken from surveillance video is included in this release. The actual video footage has been made available for viewing on the K.P.D. YouTube channel via the link below:

This same duo has committed multiple similar scams in the neighboring Mount Carmel area. Following is a link to a Kingsport Times News story reporting those incidents:

Anyone who recognizes either of these individuals is asked to contact the K.P.D. Criminal Investigations Division at 423-229-9429 or Kingsport Central Dispatch at 423-246-9111.
