A man has been arrested on multiple felony charges after evading officers and crashing the vehicle he was driving into a culvert.
On July 27, 2013 at approximately 3:20 AM, Kingsport Police Patrol Officers Brandon Ferrell and Brad Conkin were on foot on Stratford Road attempting to serve a warrant. They observed two vehicle accelerating toward them on Stratford Road at an estimated 55 mph in the 35 mph speed zone. Officer Ferrell flashed his flashlight at the vehicles and ordered them to stop. Both vehicles stopped just past where the officers were standing; however, as Officer Ferrell approached the rear of the second vehicle, a 1992 Honda Civic (light green in color), it suddenly accelerated, crossed the double yellow line, and sped south on Stratford Road over the crest of a hill and out of sight. Officer Conkin returned to his patrol car and drove in the same direction as the Honda. As he topped the hill he observed the Honda attempt a sharp left turn onto Ridgeline Drive. The driver was unable to negotiate the curve and crashed the Honda into a culvert, tipping the nose of the vehicle into the water. An individual, later identified as Steven Sexton pushed open the driver’s door and ran from the scene of the crash. Officer Conkin gave chase, and after a short foot pursuit, Mr. Sexton was apprehended. An adult female and her child were located in the crashed Honda. The child had been ejected from the car seat into the floor of the vehicle during the crash; however, nobody appeared to have sustained any injuries. Steven Sexton was arrested and charged with the following: 1) Felony Evading Arrest 2) Attempted Aggravated Child Abuse and Neglect 3) Felony Reckless Endangerment 4) Speeding 5) Failure to Provide Evidence of Financial Responsibility (No Insurance) 6) Leaving the Scene of an Accident 7) Driving on a Suspended License 8) Improper Passing 9) Reckless Driving The driver of the first vehicle was cited for speeding and released.
