General Narrative |
The Kingsport Police Department was presented with two Traffic Safety awards at the 26th annual Tennessee Lifesavers Conference.
Each year, the Tennessee Governor’s Highway Safety Office sponsors the Law Enforcement Challenge, a program that recognizes innovations in Traffic Safety. This was the 9th year of this competition. The Kingsport Police Department has participated in the Law Enforcement Challenge from its inception, and throughout the years has won various awards in Traffic Safety. Each participating agency must submit their programs, data, training records, and statistics from the previous calendar year, documenting the effectiveness of each of the programs in the area of traffic safety. Representatives from the International Association of Chiefs of Police judge the materials and then make their recommendations to the State Governors Highway Safety Office. The results of the Law Enforcement Challenge are announced each year at the Tennessee Lifesavers Conference. This year’s 26th annual conference was held September 4-6 in Murfreesboro, TN. While the Law Enforcement Challenge is a nationwide competition, the State of Tennessee led the Nation this year in the number of law enforcement agencies participating in the program. For 2012, the Kingsport Police Department once again participated in the Law Enforcement Challenge. In the category of 101-200 Police Officers the Franklin Police Department won 1st place, the Kingsport Police Department 2nd Place, and the Johnson City Police Department 3rd Place. Additionally each agency can make submissions in special categories such as DUI Enforcement, Speed Enforcement & Awareness, Occupant Protection, Child Passenger Safety, and Motorcycle Safety. Detective Terry Christian heads the Kingsport Police Department’s Child Passenger Safety section, and due to her diligent work, the Kingsport Police Department took top honors in the State for Child Passenger Safety. Since 2005 the Kingsport Police Department has placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd each year in the Law Enforcement Challenge. In 2005 K.P.D. won a fully equipped police cruiser at no cost and over the years has won numerous items including radar units, flashlights, video cameras, etc. for law enforcement use.
