General Narrative |
UPDATE: Three additional Good Samaritans/Brave Citizens have been identified.
Upon interviewing witnesses to the crash, three additional Good Samaritans/Brave Citizens have been identified as being directly involved in the rescue of the Bellamy family from the Ford SUV while it was fully engulfed in flames. Their names have been added to this release. Public Safety Officials from Police, Fire, and EMS almost always recommend that private citizens leave criminal apprehension, fire fighting, and rescue operations to the professionals; however, in this case it was obvious that time was of the essence. Acting immediately rather than waiting for the professionals to arrive truly made a difference. It is important to note that of the five individuals identified as coming to the rescue, two of them received injuries themselves while rendering aid. In this day and age it is much more common for people to turn a blind eye than to come to the aid of a stranger. These five heroes should be recognized for their noble efforts. It could potentially be another 48 to 72 hours before the identity of the driver of the Acura is positively confirmed and released. As previously released: UPDATE: Some vehicle and driver/passenger information is being released in the fatal traffic crash. Some updated vehicle and driver/passenger information has been added to this release. The identity of the deceased driver of the Acura will not be released yet pending positive identification and notification of family members. K.P.D. Traffic Unit Crash Reconstructionists have calculated the speed at impact of both vehicle involved. The Ford SUV was travelling 35 miles per hour, which is well within the posted speed limit of 45 mph. However, the Acura was travelling 104 mph when it crossed the center lane and struck the Ford SUV head-on. The identities of the Good Samaritans who rescued the occupants of the Ford SUV and attempted the rescue of the driver of the Acura are also included in this release. The Kingsport Police Department would like to commend these brave citizens who placed their own well-being at risk to save the lives of three complete strangers. Were it not for their prompt response and selfless actions, more lives would likely have been lost. One individual has been killed, and three critically injured, in a head-on collision. On September 14, 2013 at approximately 8:15 PM, the Kingsport Police Department was notified of a two vehicle crash on Ft. Henry Drive near South Street. The investigation revealed that a Ford Sport Utility Vehicle with three occupants was southbound on Fort Henry Drive in the inside lane and was passing South Street. A passenger car was northbound on Fort Henry Drive and was approaching South Street at a very high rate of speed. The passenger car crossed the center turn lane, entered the southbound inside lane and struck the Ford SUV head on. After the impact, both vehicles erupted into flames. Several citizens stopped to assist, and two citizens pulled the occupants of the Ford SUV to safety while the vehicle was still on fire. The two citizens also attempted to removed the driver of the passenger car from the vehicle but could not due to the flames. The driver of the passenger car received fatal injuries. All three occupants of the Ford SUV were transported to Holston Valley Medical Center with critical injuries. At this time the name of the involved will not be released pending identification and notification of family members. The investigation is ongoing by the Kingsport Police Department Traffic Unit.
