GENERAL NARRATIVE |
A suspect is in custody in a Kingsport Police investigation into recent thefts from the parking lot of Tractor Supply.
Shortly after midnight on November 11, 2014, a white male suspect cut a security cable and stole a Baja Warrior Mini-Bike ($650 value) from the parking lot of Tractor Supply Company, located at 2606 Minnich Trail in Kingsport. At approximately 4:15 AM, the same suspect returned to the Tractor Supply parking lot and stole four Kohler engines ($430 value each/total value $1,720) after unbolting them from log splitters. Later the same day, the suspect was spotted with an accomplice in a parking lot in the Lynn Garden area where they were attempting to sell one of the engines. The suspect was initially known to be traveling in a silver sedan, but the car was eventually able to be identified as a silver 2-door Honda Accord. On November 20, 2014 at approximately 5:45 PM, a K.P.D. detective, following a lead, located the suspect, later identified as Travis A. Bellew, sitting in the driver seat of the previously described Honda parked in the parking lot of Food City, located at 1205 North Eastman Road in Kingsport. The vehicle was also occupied by a female passenger. The detective activated his blue lights and approached the vehicle on foot; however, as soon as Mr. Bellew saw him, he recklessly sped off, nearly striking another vehicle in the parking lot. With the assistance of a citizen tip, the vehicle was located within a few minutes by a K.P.D. patrol officer on East Sullivan Street near the Oak Street intersection. The officer initiated a traffic stop and this time, Mr. Bellew complied. He was promptly arrested for felony evading arrest and felony reckless endangerment and transported to the Kingsport City Jail. He was also found to be wanted on an outstanding K.P.D. warrant for domestic assault, so that warrant was served as well. After further investigation, including an interview with detectives, the charge of theft over $1,000 in the Tractor Supply theft case was added to his list of charges. He is currently being held in the Kingsport City Jail pending arraignment. Detectives have recovered some, but not all of the stolen items, and Mr. Bellew’s unidentified accomplice is still being sought. Anyone who can identify the accomplice or who may have any information which may help detectives recover the remaining stolen property is asked to call the K.P.D. Criminal Investigations Division at 423-229-9429 or Kingsport Central Dispatch at 423-246-9111.
