GENERAL NARRATIVE |
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as National Police Week. Traditionally, the local Fraternal Order of Police Burgess-Mills Lodge #11 conducts a Police Memorial Service at the Kingsport Justice Center, located at 200 Shelby Street in Downtown Kingsport, on Monday afternoon of National Police Week.
This year’s service will be held today, Monday, May 12, 2014 at 4:00 PM. The Kingsport Police Department extends an open invitation to anyone who would like to join us as we remember and honor our local fallen officers, as well as all fallen officers throughout the nation. A Candlelight Vigil will follow at 8:00 PM. Kingsport Police Department’s Chief of Police, David Quillin, will deliver the keynote address. Additional speakers include Sheriff Wayne Anderson of the Sullivan County, TN Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff John Puckett of the Scott County, VA Sheriff’s Office. The Kingsport Police Department Honor Guard will be conducting the ceremonial honors. The following two inscriptions are found on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C. “This Memorial is dedicated to all Law Enforcement Officers in the United States of America. Inscribed on these walls are the names of those men and women who died in the line of duty.” “It is not how these officers died that made them heroes. It is how they lived.” Links to the National Police Week website, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund website, and the Officer Down Memorial Page are provided below: |
