Kingsport Public Library to unveil satellite seed library this Saturday
Seed library will remain at the Kingsport Farmers Market all season long
The Kingsport Public Library is partnering with Kingsport Cultural Arts to unveil a new, satellite seed library this Saturday at the opening day of the Kingsport Farmers Market.
A seed library is a depository of flower, plant and vegetable seeds that can be “borrowed” by local gardeners and farmers to plant and grow. Then, at the end of the season, folks can donate back to the library a sampling of seeds from their harvest to be used by fellow growers next year.
“We started the seed library with donations from our community partners and have sent out thousands of seeds since opening it to the public,” said Customer Experience Librarian Jonas Clubb. “Our goal is to build a sustainable collection of seeds patrons can use for many years to come.”
The Kingsport Public Library has offered a seed library at the second floor circulation desk for just over two years. On Saturday, a new satellite seed library – with 112 seed packets – will be unveiled at the Kingsport Farmers Market (308 Clinchfield Street).
This new seed library will remain at the market throughout the 2024 season. Seed donations will also be accepted at this site throughout the year to help maintain the project.
“When you grow and save your own seeds you develop seek stock that is well suited to our climate, you save money and you mitigate our dependence on agro-business,” Clubb added. “In short, seed libraries help the community create a culture of sharing and abundance.”
