Kingsport Public Library introduces two “Little Free Libraries”
KINGSPORT – What is Little Free Library? Its a take a book, leave a book gathering place where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories. In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book and read it. Return it to any Little Free Library or pass it on to a friend. Share a book of your own by putting it inside the Little Library for others to read.

There are over 10,000 Little Free Libraries installed world-wide. The Kingsport Public Library recently installed two as part of their outreach to the community. There is one outside the library located near the KATS bus pick-up point on New Street and its painted in the red and black Geek the Library promotional campaign colors. The other one is in the lobby at Bays Mountain and is painted with the librarys logo colors. Each LFL holds about 20 books. They were purchased with a donation from the Friends of the Kingsport Public Library.
Little Free Library is a movement started by Todd Bol of Hudson and Rick Brooks of Madison in 2010, and has grown to include little libraries in most states and dozens of countries. Their mission is to:
- Promote literacy and the love of reading
- Foster a sense of community and connection
- Build more than 2,510 libraries around the world (the number of libraries built by steel magnate, Andrew Carnegie).
