General Narrative |
A second individual has died in the fatal I-26 crash.
The Kingsport Police Department was notified late this afternoon by the Knox County Coroner’s Office that the 4 year old child previously reported as sustaining critical life-threatening injuries has died as a result of these injuries. The child was pronounced dead today at approximately 4:00 PM within 15 minutes of the medical transport helicopter arriving at University of Tennessee Medical Center. The investigation into this crash is still ongoing. The Kingsport Police Department wishes to extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of these two individuals who lost their lives today. As previously reported: The Kingsport Police Department’s Traffic Unit is investigating a fatal I-26 traffic crash. On February 26, 2014 at approximately 12:45 PM, Kingsport Central Dispatch was notified of a traffic crash on westbound Interstate 26 at mile marker 1.4. K.P.D. Patrol and Traffic Units responded to the scene. Their investigation revealed that a 1992 Honda Civic 4-door sedan, driven by Terri Temple, was westbound on Interstate 26. The Honda was also occupied by a 4 year old male back seat passenger. For unknown reasons the driver’s side tires veered off the left side of the road. When the driver attempted to return the vehicle to the roadway, she overcorrected and sent the vehicle into a yaw. Meanwhile, a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze 4-door sedan, driven by Paul Laycock, had stopped on the right shoulder, out of the traffic lanes, so Mr. Laycock could manipulate the vehicle’s GPS navigation system. The spinning Honda crashed into the stopped Chevrolet. Mr. Laycock was not injured in the crash; however, Ms. Temple was fatally injured in the crash. Her 4 year old male back seat passenger received critical life-threatening injuries and was transported to Holston Valley Medical Center by Sullivan County E.M.S. After his arrival at Holston Valley Medical Center, he was forwarded to University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee by helicopter. One traffic lane of westbound I-26 was temporarily closed for approximately one hour, but has since been reopened. This crash is still under investigation by the K.P.D. Traffic Unit.
